Our aim is to continue to provide opportunities, to develop skills, reduce isolation, and bring our Salford community together.
by Salford City Radio in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
One member of staff, 65-100 volunteers at any one time, and thousands of guests over the years make up the team that is Salford City Radio. As Salford’s community radio station we are proud to have served Salford for nearly 18 years, providing a platform and a voice for community and charitable organisations, local businesses, schools, local theatres, artists and musicians from Salford and further afield, and much, much more.
Sue Sutton CEO of Salix Homes with Jill Bowyer Station Manager, recording 'Lets Talk Housing with Salix Homes' which broadcasts every Wednesday at 10am. Salix sponsor Salford City Radio, and use the radio as another platform to inform and answer questions asked by their customers.
Jill is currently working with the public health department producing the show 'Health Matters in Salford' with medical teams raising awareness of health campaigns across Salford.
She also promotes what's happening in and around Salford and beyond, including theatre companies, events, writers, actors, musicians, artists and charitable organisations.
Below Reverend David Gray, Servant Leader in Britain and the Islands for the Progressive Christian Alliance; founding faculty member of Greater Manchester Pagan & Witches Chaplaincy, and published author of multiple books, live on air on Witches Hour Tuesday 2pm. David does amazing work, and is able to reach an additional and wider audience on radio. He interviews a wide variety of guests and produces shows for Hate Crime Awareness.
As a not for profit organisation we rely on grants, sponsorship, advertising, donations and fund raising events to cover our running costs at all times.
Allan Shalks is the presenter of 'Taking You Back in Time' Wednesday 1pm and 'Magic of the Musicals' Wednesday 2pm, he also promotes the work of Salford City Radio in the community and works to accrue advertising to bring in much needed funds to enable us to continue to provide opportunities for the people of Salford, and local businesses and organisations.
Presenter of 'A Bit of Everything' Tuesday 6pm Ian Rothwell promotes local musicians and performers, and has provided a platform for years for the 'Back to 60' campaign in support of women born in the 1950s who were denied their state pension at age 60.
Steve Pendlebury, studio technician and presenter always willing and able to assist the station. Steve suffered a life changing stroke in his thirties when he was working as a radio engineer, and not long after also had a kidney transplant. He was determined to enjoy his life and to be independent. He's an inspiration to us all...
He regularly repairs equipment saving the station money and helping us to stay on air. Steve says as well as being fun, it is work and gives him a reason to get up in the morning. His sense of humour lifts the spirits of all those around him.
Zac Peach volunteer studio manager and presenter has been promoting new music on Salford City Radio for over seventeen years. He also logs into the system the shows of other volunteer presenters weekly, and offers supervision to other volunteers so that they can do their shows. He still finds time to produce three two hour shows weekly:
Declaration of Independence Wednesday 8-10pm
Local Legends Friday 8-10pm
Unsigned, Sealed and Delivered Sunday 3-5pm
Matthew Ainscough presenter of the Alternative, Punk and Goth show Mondays 9pm and trainee studio manager. Matthew engages in all Salford City Radio has to offer, learning new skills and developing an excellent CV. He's represented SCR at several election vote counts, promoted local musicians, attended station events and supports other volunteers so that they can present/produce their own shows. He always has a smile and a friendly word for everyone too.
Colin Weston had a long career in television before volunteering at Salford City Radio when he retired. Colin loves producing and presenting his show which broadcasts Thursday 7pm, but also loves connecting with others when he comes into Salford City Radio, and being part of our station community, and connecting with the Salford community through broadcast. Colin participates in all events and fundraising activities to keep the radio broadcasting because he appreciates and benefits from what it adds to his life, and wants the radio to continue broadcasting forever.

Below are Tabytha and Roberta, Tabytha is a third year student at Salford Uni and is gaining valuable experience at Salford City Radio and adding extras to her CV. She's contributing to shows, assisting with social media and recently recorded members of the public at Salford Royal Hospital as part of Salford City Radio's Hate Crime Awareness series of programmes. Roberta assists with a variety of supporting tasks including video editing, and occasionally presents breakfast and other shows.
Michelle above, also known as Smokey Top Poet presents a Music and Poetry show on Sunday at 9am. She is currently selling her latest book to raise funds for Salford City Radio. Michelle said when she came to the radio as a volunteer she had no confidence, and Salford City radio has helped her develop confidence and enabled her to do what she does today.
Jane and Mike of 'The Jane and Mike Band' also authors who have used book sales to raise funds for Salford City Radio, have been volunteer presenters on and off for many years. Mike was one of the stations first Directors and Jane was a presenter on the very first community radio show in Manchester, when she was working as a nurse in Mental Health. Their current show 'Green Giraffes and Worms' Thursday 10am, is about environmental issues which they are passionate about, and they record peoples stories both locally and sometimes further afield for broadcast on their programme.
Paul Hallows presenter of The Fully Loaded Show Tuesday 11am regularly interviews musicians and tribute artists on his show. Paul says Salford City Radio helped him to come to terms with the death of his father in the early days of the stations broadcasting, and gives him a sense of purpose.
Chris Perry, a singer became a volunteer presenter after being interviewed on Salford City Radio about his show on at Swinton Legion to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer.
These are just a few of of dedicated volunteers.
It’s a difficult time financially for everyone, and so difficult to ask for your help.
Since the pandemic less people have attended events and fundraising activities, and growing numbers of volunteer organisations though wonderful, mean that money to support the work they do is spread more thinly.
Salford City Radio is at very real risk of closure...
Your donations will help us to continue to keep our community resource open providing opportunities to gain new skills and experience to put them in a better position to find paid employment, give a reason to get up out of bed, and feel valued as they're doing something useful to help other people in their community.
