We are aiming to raise a £2000 budget for our opera-drama 'Said the Maggot to the Fly'
We are a fellowship of storytellers of the screen, schooled in the halls of the university, whose minds burn with craft and daring. In all humility do we beseech the granting of two thousand pounds sterling, that we might give breath and flesh unto a bold work wherein opera and moving picture are bound as one.
Said the Maggot to the Fly is an ambitious and creative third-year university project at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
The story explores a town whose people know no true happiness, only a life of dull routine. Our protagonist, Bangk, is a miserable man who spends his days tinkering in a torture workshop, creating horrific contraptions that he displays to the townspeople, who watch these grim spectacles with complete apathy. Everything changes when Bangk is visited by a dying angel who gifts him a beautiful song. For the first time, Bangk truly begins to feel.

So why support this film?
As young people, opera is not an art form we engage with often. We felt it was important to bring opera back into the spotlight and explore how music can be used as a tool for visual storytelling. Our short film is incredibly ambitious, and for our final university project, we felt it was worth going all in. Our shared passion for music, our interest in exploring new creative endeavours, and our existing experience in filmmaking come together to form a unique and exciting vision.
