Aim: Help our musicians to bring Sagas and Seascapes live to an international audience and support new art for the show from Orla Stevens.
Nordic Viola's popular Sagas and Seascapes has been selected as part of the Made In Scotland showcase at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. As we bring this programme to an international audience we need your help to support our musicians in this first live multimedia performance with video by Craig Sinclair and to create stunning new artwork specially for Edinburgh by landscape artist Orla Stevens.
The Music
Norse stories form the inspiration for this programme. Award-winning Irish composer Linda Buckley’s Aud draws on the Icelandic Sagas. Lillie Harris’ Elsewhen seeks to capture the strangeness, wonder, and melancholy of Orkney’s ancient sites, whilst in Carry His Relics, Orkney composer Gemma McGregor describes a journey along the St Magnus Way. Faroese composer Eli Tausen á Lava draws on legends of the Selkies common across the North whilst his compatriot, Kári Bæk, depicts the sea in all its moods.
The Art
Sagas and Seascapes features a rich mix of images to accompany the music by Nordic composers and the influence of landscape and community. The landscape paintings were created by artist Orla Stevens in response to Linda Buckley’s Aud, Lillie Harris’ Elsewhen and Gemma McGregor's Carry His Relics. We want to raise money for Orla to create more art in response to Eli Tausen á Lava's Tale of the Sealwoman in 10 Pictures, which explores this legend binding the cultures of the North Atlantic.
Our Ambitions
Our performance makes strong connections between the cultures of the North Atlantic and we are excited to make new international connections at the Festival Fringe and hope to travel in the future to Iceland, the Faroes and the wider Nordic and European area with our show. We look forward to keeping in touch with you all on this exciting journey.
