Aim

Sponsor me to fundraise for Colombian women to build peace after a legacy of colonialism & war, to share their achievements and challenges.

Women and girls suffer disproportionately in Colombia’s armed conflict and gender violence as well as deep-rooted and systematic discrimination against women are still a reality. According to OXFAM, 245 women in Colombia are victims of abuse every day, and 90% of cases still face impunity.

The Peace Accord between the Colombian government and the largest left-wing guerrilla group, the FARC, which was signed in 2016, provides a unique opportunity for Colombia to change pervasive patriarchal values and build a sustainable peace for women.

However, there is still a lot to be done to ensure the gender commitments are actually implemented. Fierce political opposition has already provided some challenges to the hard-won gender agreements.

The ambitious terms of the Colombian Peace Accord regarding gender equality will need continuous close international monitoring to ensure they are implemented in practice.

ABColombia, the organisation I am supporting, wants to provide a platform for Colombian women leaders to support them in their efforts to achieve the implementation of the gender agreements in the Peace Accord. Rather than speaking about them, ABColombia gives women an opportunity to present their own views in the international arena.

Therefore, ABColombia is organising an international conference in London to bring Colombian women leaders, UK and international policy makers together to discuss the achievements of Colombian women and the challenges they now face in the peace process. I will be running 10k in Windsor this September to fundraise to make this possible. Can you support us?
