The aim of the challenge is to sit in every seat (499!) in the Matcham Auditorium in under 30 minutes, to raise money for the Theatre.
Project by Wakefield Theatre Trust
Everyone knows that the Theatre Royal Wakefield is a wonderfully intimate theatre and every seat offers a great view of the stage...
Local actor and Theatre Trustee Darren Johnson (Ruby Rhubarb) is willing to put it to the test by sitting in every seat in the house. In just thirty minutes! That's 499 flip down seats across three levels - around three seconds per seat! What better way to help raise funds for this beautiful theatre than using the building itself?
Darren said:
“Since the first time I visited the theatre as a member of the Gallery 20 Youth Theatre back in the eighties, I must have seen countless shows and sat in many of the seats in the auditorium. By the end of this challenge I will be able to proudly say that I’ve actually sat in them all. And all for a great cause, the Theatre itself.
These days, as a recently appointed trustee, I realise more than ever just how important that this theatre is for Wakefield, not only as a place of entertainment but also for the important work it does in the community. From its weekly performing arts training sessions for young people to its outreach and community work and Theatre of Sanctuary status. In the past, I’ve fundraised by abseiling from Wakefield Cathedral and running the London Marathon and such like, but these days a fundraising activity that involves sitting down seems a lot more up my street.... even though the challenge of completing it in thirty minutes adds a touch of jeopardy.”
Not everyone knows it but Theatre Royal Wakefield is a charity and receives no regular public funding so they rely on the generous support of people like you.
Every single donation you make helps the Theatre continue its great work! #RubyRhubarbsFullHouse
