Rehoming Centre Solar Panel Project - Phase 2

Aim

RSPCA West Norfolk's dream is to be the UK’s greenest Rehoming Centre and these solar panels will really help us with this ambitious goal!

🌿 West Norfolk RSPCA: For the Animals. For the Environment. For the Future.

At West Norfolk RSPCA, we have three core priorities:

As an independent branch of the RSPCA, we receive very little funding from the national RSPCA. This means every single penny we spend is raised by us — through donations, fundraising, our shops and the generosity of supporters like you.

We are dedicated to the care of companion animals — dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small mammals. In addition, our Community Pet Welfare Scheme provides vital veterinary vouchers to help local families with emergency vet bills and neutering costs.

🐶 2024: A Record-Breaking Year for Rehoming

In 2024, we saw a 35% increase in animals entering our care — an unprecedented surge. Despite this, our team rose to the challenge and delivered remarkable results, with our rehoming rate also increasing by 33%.

📈 Rehoming Figures

• 2022 – 303 animals rehomed
• 2023 – 390 animals rehomed
• 2024 – 519 animals rehomed (a record year!)

This success comes at a cost. The additional animals landed us with an extra £22,000 in veterinary costs — a huge financial strain for a self-funded centre. We estimate that these solar panels will save us a whopping £11,000 per year! What's not to like?

🌱 Our Commitment to the Environment

We believe animal welfare should never come at the expense of the planet. That’s why, four years ago, we committed to reducing our environmental impact. Since then, we’ve proudly achieved:

✅ Installation of solar panels at the Rehoming Centre and our Hunstanton charity shop
✅ Complete upgrade to LED lighting in both locations
✅ Transition from diesel vehicles to electric and plug-in hybrid models
✅ Switch from quarried clay cat litter to an eco-friendly recycled paper alternative

☀️ A Solar-Powered Future — With Your Help

Now, we are taking on our most ambitious green project yet. Thanks to recent regulatory changes, UK Power Networks have granted us permission to expand our solar panel array at the Rehoming Centre by nearly 60kW — a fourfold increase in capacity!

🌞 If we can raise the funds to make this happen, the new system will eliminate over 100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions over the next decade.
