The project will replace a Trinity 500 boat to increase and retain participation in rowing for young people in Poole Sea Cadets aged 10-18.
Sea Cadets is the UK’s national maritime youth charity, inspiring young people aged 10–18 through nautical adventure and personal development. Operating in over 400 units nationwide, it provides practical water-based activities such as sailing, rowing, powerboating and kayaking, alongside leadership and teamwork challenges.
The programme focuses on building confidence, resilience, and life skills while offering nationally recognised qualifications like RYA awards and Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Supported by the Royal Navy, its mission is to give young people a positive start in life, develop practical skills, and encourage lifelong engagement with boating and adventure.
We are seeking funding to replace an existing rowing boat that has been in use at Poole Sea Cadets for approximately 15 years. This boat has been a core part of our waterborne programme, providing countless cadets with practical rowing experience, teamwork development and confidence on the water. However, due to its age and wear, it is now less reliable, more difficult to maintain safely, and limits the number of cadets we can train effectively.
Rowing is a fundamental skill within the Sea Cadet water training syllabus and a key way that cadets learn personal responsibility, physical fitness, teamwork and seamanship. Through rowing activities we help young people build confidence, resilience and life skills in a structured, supportive environment — all grounded in the core Sea Cadet values of respect, loyalty, self-discipline, commitment, honesty, integrity and courage. A new rowing boat would allow us to:
Increase training capacity — enabling more cadets to take part safely and gain recognised rowing proficiency.
Improve safety and accessibility — modern equipment is easier to handle and maintain, reducing risk and downtime.
Support broader community engagement — we host regional competitions and outreach sessions, and a new boat would be used not only by our own members but by visiting cadets from across the South.
Enhance continuity of learning — reliable equipment means we can run regular sessions throughout the year, helping cadets to progress through Sea Cadet training stages and retain long-term interest in boating.
This investment in essential watersports infrastructure will directly support our mission to inspire young people through nautical adventure, develop practical life skills, and give them a strong start in life.
Our project will be a direct purchase of a brand new Trinity 500 Rowing Boat. £6,600
The impact will not just be limited to Poole Sea Cadets. Other local Sea Cadet units also use our facilities, whether for training, practice sessions, or competitions.
We also host Southern Area competitions, bringing together Sea Cadets from across the region — from our local area through to Kent and as far north as Oxford — to compete in rowing events.
We have had 2 fantastic grant offers so far. £3300 from Sports England and £2200 from the Steven Bernard Foundation.
