Who we are
Roots Radical Learning is a radical, outdoor education setting for children between 5 and 9 years old. Roots is a space for every child to be who they are - to guide us and expand into their own interests and being, without interruption or expectation.
Roots opened to our first families in March 2022 and plans to grow year after year alongside the children as we build together our child-led, consent-focused community. Currently Roots is based at the Children’s Allotment site in Cowley, Oxford (UK).
Why we need your help
The site is spacious and wild with a giant poly tunnel as our main indoor space. As we prepare for winter we will need a warm, insulated space which will be situated in the middle of the site offering a cosy and quieter place for the children’s plans to flourish.
A heated yurt will meet our needs and help ensure minimum disruption to the site during the children’s year, as the installation can happen over a weekend and be ready and warm for the start of the following week. As a priority we need to raise £10,200 for a suitable yurt (including heating and lighting bills and accounting for Crowdfunder's commission).
Any further money raised would allow us to expand our pool of resources for the children here at Roots, and reaching £16,200 would help us to create a bursary place for a year for a child starting in 2023/24.
Risks and challenges
We have researched and budgeted for the maximum amount needed to ensure we have a safe and heated yurt of an appropriate size. We are aiming to source secondhand and preloved materials as much as possible for this project as we do across our entire programme. The aim is to have purchased a yurt and heating system in good time for installation in mid October 2022.
