Roots, written by London-based Filipino playwright Jose Socrates Delos Reyes, will be featured at Peckham Fringe 2026 with performances at Theatre Peckham’s Studio 1 on May 11 and May 12 at 8 PM.

A father, a daughter, and the memories carried home

The play follows Alon and Corazon, father and daughter who travel to the Philippines to bury Bobby, Corazon’s grandfather. As they make their way home, long-buried memories that span decades begin to resurface, forcing them to confront the social, political, and economic conditions that shaped their family’s migration.

“The stares, the backhanded compliments? It’ll always keep happening. Sabi ko nga sa inyo di ba, the most important thing: don’t give them reasons to keep staring.”

A new Filipino work in development

Roots is the latest work from Jose Socrates Delos Reyes, also known as Soc, whose plays have been featured in both the Philippines and the UK. Delos Reyes was awarded the Snoo Wilson Prize for Scriptwriting and the Woven Voices Prize by Woven Voices and the Gate Theatre for his play In the Remains.

Delos Reyes says of Roots:

We all carry pieces of home, of the Philippines. These pieces could've been our anting-anting since our first flight abroad. Or it could be the pamana that our parents passed on to us. Roots is a celebration and an insistence of being Filipino in the UK.

That's why I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to feature Filipino voices, bodies, and stories in the British theatre scene. It's been especially enlightening to connect with Filipino creatives from all sorts of migrant backgrounds. It's rare to have shows that center Filipino experiences and languages. Roots is my own step towards changing that.

The production is directed by Tara Jamora Oppen, a freelance director, actor, and multi-hyphenate theatre maker from the Philippines. Jamora Oppen trained in Theatre Arts at Ateneo de Manila University before moving to the UK to pursue a master’s degree in Directing from LAMDA.

The Filipino cast features Mikki Villa as Alon, Rose Charmaine Camacho as Corazon, and Amar Atienza as Bobby. The cast’s collective acting experience includes professional productions in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, and the UK.

A Filipino-led creative team

The wider creative team includes dramaturg Dominique La Victoria, an award-winning Filipino theatre artist whose recent credits writing credits include Can Mangoes Grow in Glasgow, staged by A Play, A Pie and A Pint at Òran Mór for A Slice of the Pie, and This Is My Name, a new musical she is co-writing with Melisa Camba, developed at Birmingham Hippodrome and showcased at multiple venues across England.

The production is also supported by fellow Filipino artists Rio Tanchuling as Stage and Production Manager, Louise Pimentel as production designer, and Marianne Therese Cadiz as graphic designer.

The creative team is rounded out by Indian theatre artist bhakti as Lights Designer and British artist EJ Walker as Sounds Designer.

Roots will be performed at Studio 1, Theatre Peckham, as part of Peckham Fringe 2026, on May 11 and May 12 at 8 PM.

Don’t miss this powerful new Filipino play-in-development exploring migration, memory, family, and the complicated histories that shape what we inherit.
