We are raising £10,000 to buy a 14m x 14m FIG-approved rhythmic gymnastics carpet for our Queensbridge venue, so children can train safely
Rhythmic Excellence has been coaching in Hackney since 2015. Today we train around 60 children and 20 adults, most of them girls aged 5 to 16. Our gymnasts have represented Team GB at the Junior World Championships and won a Commonwealth Games team bronze. This year, six gymnasts competed at the 2026 British Championships, and achieved medals in the under-12 category.
This September we had to open a second venue at Queensbridge, bringing an Olympic sport within reach of young children who have never had the chance to try this beautiful sport.
Rhythmic gymnastics requires a specialist floor. Routines involve ribbons, hoops, balls and clubs thrown several metres into the air and caught while gymnasts roll, leap and land. The sport's governing body, the FIG (International Gymnastics Federation), sets the standard for the carpet used in training and competition.
Our original venue has this type of carpet. However, this venue is no longer available to us on a required full time basis. Therefore we were left with no choice, but to hire a second venue (Queensbridge) at a large cost for the days of the week when the first venue was not available. Queensbridge venue does not have this special carpet. Training without the carpet, i.e. on bare sports-hall flooring, is not safe or beneficial.
Every penny raised goes towards buying and installing a 14m x 14m FIG-approved competition carpet at the Queensbridge venue.
Hackney has among the highest rates of child and income deprivation in England. Many of our families come from ethnic-minority, single-parent or low-income households, and we're proud to have welcomed many Ukrainian refugee children into the club. Most of our gymnasts are girls aged 5-16. Many families as well as having a gymnast have younger children. Our gymnasts are diverse in every sense: ethnically, culturally and religiously.
A fully equipped Queensbridge means:
