We are going to help our rivers - clean them up, green them up with native plants, & give nature & wildlife a well-deserved helping hand!
Havering Green Streets is a community volunteer group who try to clean up and green up as much of Havering as possible. We believe we should be living alongside nature rather than destroying it or trapping it to a few lonely areas. So we bring green to our streets as much as possible, and clean up areas so it is safe for wildlife and residents as we go. We work with Havering Council to get approval on our projects so that we know it can have a lasting effect, and we get as many locals as possible involved with our projects so that they can be part of their local spaces too! We have been running since September 2021 and have made lots of projects a success already, so we would love it if you feel you could support us with this one.
On this project we woud love to clean up and green up our rivers - the Ravensbourne, the Rom and the Ingrebourne. These three rivers are home to a huge amount of wildlife, they flow water into the Thames, and they have beautiful spaces around them such as Ingrebourne Valley and Grenfell Park/The Chase. We are lucky to have these rivers on our doorstep and I would like to get the community empowered to look after these rivers and their wildlife

Our rivers have become full of rubbish, a minority are ruining the space for our wildlife and for ourselves so our aim is to take back our rivers. If we are able to reach our goal, we will go through as many safe spaces as possible with a team of local volunteers (everyone welcome to join!) in each of our rivers, removing as much litter and flytip as possible. We will note down any possible incorrect water outlets that may be causing water pollution as we go so that they can be reported - many of our rivers haven't been mapped out totally so this would be a great opportunity to see exactly what is going into our river.

En route, we will take out any invasive species such as Himalayan Balsam which is taking over our river banks. Although this plant looks great whilst in bloom it isn't native and it is quickly taking over our native species. Finally, we will have the rubbish removed from site and plant up the banks of our rivers with native wetland plants, ready to create safe new habitat for our wildlife.

We can only make this happen with your support. We hope that you are as passionate about the environment you live in as we are, and we would love you to be part of this project from start to finish so please get in touch via message, fb or twitter if you would like to help, if you have any queries or new ideas, or if you would like to volunteer with us!
We hope to see you soon,
