This project is to restore the England’s Glory lighting feature at the former Morelands Match Factory (now the Morelands Trading Estate).
Project Aim
This project is to get the iconic England’s Glory lighting feature at the former Morelands Match Factory (now the Morelands Trading Estate) on Bristol Road in Gloucester working again. This year marks 50 years since the match factory closed, so it seems like a good time to get it done!

Tell Your Story
The England’s Glory sign at the Morelands Trading Estate on Bristol Road is a landmark in Gloucester. Many of us have fond memories of seeing it lit up – but it hasn’t been working since the 1990s. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Morelands Match Factory closing, so we want to get it working again!
Morelands was a major employer in Gloucester and a lot of people will know someone who worked there. The England’s Glory brand is iconic for Gloucester and has helped to put the city on the map.
The Project
The sign is pretty old – most of it was there before the factory closed, with the trading estate wording added later. Because it has weathered over the years, it is brittle and is likely to break when it’s taken down – so we have allowed for the cost of remaking it. There is also some electrical work needed. The sign will be made exactly as it is now, with the sequence of the matches lighting up being restored to exactly as it was before.
The work will be done by two local companies – Blue Sky Signs and Gulley Electrical – who are both giving a significant discount on their costs to enable this project to go ahead.
In future, the sign will be maintained by the owners of the trading estate, who will be making a sizeable contribution to the cost of the project.
Anyone who donates £100 or more will have their name added to a plaque to be installed at ground level directly below the sign.
