Aim: To raise funds to restore St Cuthbert's Calvary War Memorial in Philbeach Gardens so that it may once again stand as a beacon of remembrance

We are incredibly fortunate to worship and gather in the beautiful, Grade I-listed Church of St Cuthbert’s – a sacred space that has served the people of Earl’s Court for over a century, through times of peace and times of war.

Standing in our garden at the east end of the church is a powerful symbol of remembrance: the Calvary War Memorial, erected after the First World War to honour those who gave their lives. Remarkably, it has stood firm through the bombings of the Second World War and the passage of time – until now.

Recently, the Calvary was found to be dangerously unstable and leaning.

A heritage specialist was called in, and after careful investigation, it was declared a risk to public safety. Emergency scaffolding was installed to prevent potential harm, and now urgent and significant repairs are needed to preserve this treasured memorial. The total cost of the project is £35,000. Thanks to a generous grant of £18,450 from the War Memorials Trust, we are already more than halfway there – but we still need to raise £16,550.

This Calvary is more than just a monument – it’s a vital part of our local heritage and a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today. I am appealing to you, as a friend of St Cuthbert’s, to consider making a donation towards its restoration. Any amount, large or small, will make a meaningful difference.

Together, we can ensure this memorial continues to stand as a beacon of remembrance for future generations.

With gratitude,

Fr Paul
