Respect Through Sports CIC
Who Are We?
Respect Through Sports (RTS) was founded in 2019 by four friends, who wanted to make a positive change within our community due to the ever rising anti social behaviour within Brent. With all of us participating heavily in sports throughout our careers, we recognised the importance of sports and the values it instilled into each one of us, which helped us steer clear of engaging in any negative behaviours.
Our Why?
Brent has notoriously been known as the home of English football, with Wembley stadium overlooking many young peoples bedrooms! What many do not know is that anti-social behaviour and violence is on the rise in Brent.
Brent has been listed as number seven in a report highlighting 'Knife Offences in London boroughs since June 2022' (Daily Mail, 2022). The report consisted of the 32 London Boroughs, with Brent being placed high up in the ranking. This further shows the importance of the intervention that is needed, and can be provided by RTS.
Today in Brent, knife crime has risen so disproportionately in comparison to the rest of the London Boroughs[post pandemic]. The borough recorded 492 knife crimes between November 2021 and October 2022' (Brent and Kilburn Times, 2022). Brent's Lead Councillor has stated that social factors and poverty are to blame for the increase in knife crime in the borough.
Our Sports Mentoring Camps are designed to give our young people the opportunity to further their mindset and learn new skills. Through our workshops and we mentor and encourage the young people to: respect one another as well as themselves; apply themselves to education and activities they enjoy; take pride in themselves and their community.
What We Do?
We run holiday camps with a twist! We champion ourselves on making each Respect Through Sports Mentoring camp an environment which allows our young people to come and have fun, make new friends, learn and most importantly, be safe. Our camps are designed for young people to be active, playing traditional and non traditional sports but also learn some valuable life skills throughout the week, which includes:
- First Aid workshops
- Financial Literacy workshops
- Career insight workshops
- Law workshops
- Cooking classes
And more...
With financial support, we aim to expand the workshops and recreational activities we offer.
Our Aim?
Our aim is to become the leading sports and mentoring provider in Brent, supporting young people at each interval in their lives, guiding and encouraging them all the way into adulthood.
We will measure our objectives using the below PWPS framework: Psychological, Wellbeing, Physical and Social skills that we seek to develop in our young people. We believe these 16 skills will help our young people to lead happy and healthy lives, along with encouraging them to act as positive social influences both in school and at home, as-well as throughout their community.
PWPS skills will be evaluated through a combination of self-assessments, coach assessments and objective measures such a fitness testing. From each assessment we will use the results to help strengthen our program's and find areas for improvement.
We intend on achieving our aims by facilitating our Sports Mentoring Camps throughout school holidays all year round, as well as rolling out our 'Behavior Mentor' program which will consist of building relationships with Schools & Local authorities to support young people that are at risk of going down the wrong path.
To achieve this, we will need the right level of financial investment to support our next generation.
