Saving the world's seagrass

Aim

There is much we are yet to learn about seagrass to fully harness it's potential for people and planet. Research is the answer.

Project Seagrass is a global facing environmental charity devoted to the conservation of seagrass ecosystems through scientific research, community engagement and action on the ground. All of our work rests on these three pillars and supports our aim of saving the world’s seagrass. 

Seagrass provides a habitat for thousands of species across the globe and boosts biodiversity, however, it is under threat. We have lost up to 92% in the UK and are currently in a climate and biodiversity crisis. By researching and understanding how seagrass thrives we can bring life back to our seas and reverse this trend.

To improve global knowledge on the conditions that seagrass thrives, the genetics of the plant and ideal planting conditions, requires research. To do this we need additional laboratory equipment such as freezers, chillers, cameras and equipment to conduct core sampling for nutrient analysis and carbon stores within seagrass. This will enable us to be less reliant on partner organisations. 

The purchase of lab equipment such as freezers would enable greater seed storage and pilot trials to take place in the UK. This funding would also enable multiple sediment cores to be taken and analysed, broadening global knowledge and furthering the goals of the Global Seagrass Nursery Network.
