Who are we?
We are a BSAC Sub Aqua Club based in Burnley & East Lancashire. The club has been in existence since 1960, and has a diverse range of club divers from the ages of 13 up to their mid 70's. We dive all year round, & use the boat during fair weather from Spring until Autumn.
Why are we crowdfunding?
We applied for a grant from Sport England to replace the heavily polluting 2-Stroke engine; they have awarded us matched funding of £7770, as long as we raise £7770 ourselves via the crowdfunding platform.
Read the Community Impact below, to see why we started.
How we’ll spend the money raised
The money will be spent on replacing our heavily polluting 2-stroke engine with an efficient 4-stroke engine, along with the associated cables & gauges required for the new engine.

Community impact
Our club engine is 150 horsepower 2-stroke which runs for a few hours whilst in use.
- Some little known facts. Did you know?
- That in only one hour of use a 2-stroke 70 horsepower engine emits the same amount of hydrocarbon pollution as driving 5000 miles in a car.
- A 20 horsepower 2-stroke engine that runs for 1 hour makes 11,000 m3 water undrinkable.
- Therefore our engine pollutes around the same as a car doing 11,000 miles for every hour it is in use.
- 2 stroke engines have not been been sold in the leisure market for nearly 20 years now due to the pollution they cause. The impact of upgrading the engine to a 4 stroke will be a very substantial benefit to our environment.
As divers we are acutely aware of the environment that we are in, & whilst we were aware a 2-stroke engine was polluting, it’s not until we researched more into the environmental impact, that it lead us to feel duty bound to take action.
By changing to a 4 Stroke engine this benefits the environment by reducing harmful emissions by up to 90%, as well as being up to 50% more fuel efficient. There is also a reduction in noise, as a 4 Stroke engine is far more quiet in operation.

How you can play your part
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
