Aim
Refund a COP26 attendee's costs who was let down by a hotel owner after travelling to Glasgow from Burkina Faso.
Hamidou Waongo from Burkina Faso, is a Forestry Manager, whose life, work & country are directly affected by the devastating climate crisis. Hamidou worked hard to attend the COP26 climate conference in Oct/Nov 2021, only to lose £600 in accommodation fees when he arrived at his hotel near Glasgow. Help restore Scotland’s reputation for warmth, kindness & great hospitality by donating today.
£600 is the equivalent of 460,000 Francs, the local currency, and 13 times the monthly minimum wage or more than one year's minimum wage in Burkina Faso, so please contribute whatever you can spare.
Hamidou reported to his accommodation within an hour of arrival at Glasgow Airport on Friday night before the start of COP26. The owner turned him away because the bedroom, as agreed, was unavailable. Hamidou was offered a camping pitch. The notion that Hamidou had carried with him, from a hot African country, a tent for accommodation on a Scottish campsite in November is of course absurd.
When Dunbartonshire Greens became aware of the situation, alternative accommodation was arranged. Since then, Hamidou & the Dunbartonshire Greens have tried their best to secure a refund from both the website & the hotel but have been unsuccessful. Unfortunately, the small claims court is not an option for non-UK residents.
Burkina Faso is landlocked with an increasing population impacted by global warming. Burkina Faso translates as the land of honest men but is ravaged by internal strife and recently had a military dictatorship imposed and was again subject to terrorist attacks by Islamist groups on 10th June, killing many Burkina Faso residents.
Let’s do what we can to right this wrong and refund Hamidou’s loss.
