Funds to support refugees & asylum seekers in Glossop to cover essentials and emergencies

Over the past year, a small group of volunteers from Glossopdale Together Alliance has been supporting three Afghan families who have made their home in Glossop. They have settled in really well, found part-time work, and become part of our community.

Recently, five young men seeking asylum have been placed in shared private accommodation in Glossop. More people are likely to be placed here in the future, and we want to be ready to welcome them.

This crowdfunder will create a dedicated, ring-fenced fund to support refugees and asylum seekers in Glossop with essentials and unexpected emergencies.

The urgent need right now:

The five young men have accommodation, but very little else. They receive less than £50 a week to cover all other living costs. They are not allowed to work or access public funds during the first six months while their asylum applications are considered.

They are keen to learn English and get involved in local life, but they arrived with almost nothing.

With community donations we have already secured a TV and TV licence, and applied for reconditioned laptops. What they still need is:

• Broadband for 12 months: £288 - so they can study, access support, and keep in touch with family
• Basic second-hand furniture including desks: £100 - so they have somewhere to study
• Bus fares to English classes: £800 - twice-weekly classes with a charity in Ashton-under-Lyne for five months for all five men, until they become eligible for Derbyshire Adult Education courses. This is currently their only option for formal lessons.
• Membership of local recreation clubs: to help them integrate, practise English, and improve wellbeing

Anything raised above this initial target will remain in the fund to support these five young men and future refugees and asylum seekers in Glossop, and to help our Afghan families with any unplanned emergencies.

How the money will be managed:

All funds will be held securely in the community account at Glossop Labour Club, which is specifically designed to hold ring-fenced funds for community projects like this. Every penny will be accounted for.
