Supporting our most vulnerable and destitute clients over the winter period

by Voices in Exile in Brighton, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

Continued support once the winter period is over

We are a small charity based in Brighton supporting refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable migrants in East and West Sussex– many of whom have no recourse to public funds.

2020 has been an extraordinary year for everyone because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The most vulnerable in our society have been worst affected. Our refugee and migrant clients are among the most disadvantaged in Brighton and beyond, often excluded from mainstream services or benefits and prevented from accessing emergency measures brought in to protect the general public.

At a time of national crisis, the government’s hostile environment policy has become, if anything, even more hostile. Free school meals are inaccessible to many children in need; support that should prevent people from becoming homeless or destitute is failing to offer a safety net; newly arrived asylum seekers have been left without any cash support since March; and in some cases vulnerable migrants are once again being left to sleep rough.

Food poverty is acute among our clients. Since March we have provided food for over 8,500 meals, delivering to more than 100 vulnerable adults and children every week. Our demand has doubled in comparison to pre-COVID levels. But this only scratches the surface. In the 15 years that Voices has been operating a food bank in Brighton, we have never seen such levels of need. We are continuing to deliver emergency supplies and culturally appropriate food to people who are in desperate need each and every week.

Isolation is also a huge problem for our clients, so we want to make sure that people can stay connected with friends and family this winter and access online advice, using phones and other devices.

We need your help!

This winter we are raising money so that we can urgently continue to provide food, essential items and emergency hardship grants to our clients.

Our message is simple: to Help Everyone in need throughout this public health emergency, regardless of someone’s immigration status.

Tinashe is one of the many people we have supported. He fled the Zimbabwean regime and made it to the UK to seek asylum and safety. He was refused asylum and became dependent on vital support from friends and charities while he sought further legal advice. Like many, his support network collapsed when Coronavirus led to a national lockdown and he was forced into homelessness. Since working with Tinashe, Voices in Exile has provided food and other essential items, helped him get off the streets and given him back a basic level of dignity.

You can read more about Tinashe’s story in the Guardian.

We believe it is more important than ever to help people like Tinashe.

Please donate what you can so we can continue to make a difference. Thank you from everyone at Voices in Exile.
