Redwing is a not-for-profit social enterprise founded in 2011 in Penzance, Cornwall.
Redwing has a history of providing a safe space for all, a place to engage with other community members, dialogue with artists, create new ideas for social change, grow stronger as individuals and as a community. Redwing provides a welcoming space where differences are respected and encouraged.
In late 2023 Redwing relocated to the long-disused Humphry Davy pub (originally known as St John’s House) on Alverton Street in Penzance.
We have been awarded £250,000 by the Government's Community Ownership Fund (COF) to help buy the building for the community.
We need to raise the remainder quickly (the asking price is £325,000 plus VAT) to access the funding and buy the building by December 2025.
Time is running out.
Please donate what you can and share our story.
Our plan is to;
- Raise match funding to buy the building
- Keep the doors open for the community to use the building in perpetuity.
Preventing Climate Impacts:
Supporting Environmental Activism and Advocacy: By providing a dedicated space for groups like Friends of the Earth, XR, Penwith Environmental Network and Greenpeace, the project strengthens grassroots efforts to combat climate change, influence local policies, and promote sustainability.
Encouraging a Circular Economy: Our Penzance Repair Cafe helps reduce waste by extending the life of household items, cutting down on landfill use, and promoting a culture of reuse and repair.
Sustainable Food Systems: Acting as a hub for Bosavern Community Farm veg boxes and running Penzance Community Larder reduces food waste and supports local regenerative agriculture, which helps lower carbon emissions from industrial food production and transport.
Preparing for Climate Change
Building Community Resilience: By hosting environmental education, arts and sustainability-focused events, the space equips people with the knowledge and skills to adapt to climate challenges.
Fostering Collaboration and Local Networking: Bringing together environmental groups, artists and community members encourages collective action and strengthens local networks, making Penzance more adaptable to climate-related challenges.
Empowering Creative Solutions: Arts-based initiatives help engage the community in storytelling, awareness campaigns and creative problem-solving around environmental and social issues.
Protecting Against Climate Impacts
Providing a Safe, Inclusive Space:
The building offers warmth in winter, shade in summer, and a place for people facing food insecurity or social isolation.
Reducing Reliance on High-Carbon Systems: By promoting plant-based, local food options, repair over replacement, and community-driven action, the project helps people transition towards more sustainable lifestyles.
Strengthening Food Security: Our community larder and farm partnership ensure access to nutritious low-carbon food, reducing vulnerability to supply-chain disruptions caused by climate change.
This initiative fosters a self-reliant, connected and climate-conscious community, making Penzance a model for sustainable living and social resilience.
