Help open Redruth Workshop

Aim

Help turn an old bank into a community workshop, with tools, shared skills and hand-built games, and get Invention Club running again.

We’ve got the space. Help us get it ready.

We’re turning the old bank on Fore Street in Redruth into a community workshop where people can build and play with games, machines and inventions. Redruth Workshop will be a place where people can share ideas and skills, work together on projects, and welcome visitors to come in and try what we’ve made. 

We’ve done this before, and we want to do more

We’re Fluxus Cornwall CIC, a local not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers.

We’ve run Invention Club at The Art Room and organised the Cornish Contraptions exhibition, which brought together 30 machines by 19 makers and welcomed around 1,000 visitors over four days.

People came to try the machines and stayed to talk to the makers. Our workshops brought people of different ages and backgrounds together to work things out and help each other.

A more permanent home will let us build on that, re-open our invention club with more room for equipment, projects and regular sessions in the centre of Redruth. It will be somewhere a project can stay on the workbench until next week, rather than having to be packed away at the end of every session.

What is invention club?

Invention Club was a very popular weekly group that we ran at The Art Room, until we ran out of space! It brought people together to build games, moving sculptures, mechanical contraptions and other inventions. Some projects involved woodwork and mechanisms; others needed electronics, coding, drawing or painting. Often they needed a bit of everything.

We’ve got the building and plenty of things we want to make. Now we need help getting the space ready and equipping it so we can welcome people in.

What your donation will help pay for

• Finishing the essential work inside, including painting, flooring and sorting out the ceiling.
• Tools, equipment, workbenches and storage for a shared workshop.
• Materials and supplies to get Invention Club running again.

We’ll make use of what we already have, repair and reuse where we can, and buy equipment that people can share.

Getting the doors open

We’re getting the space ready in stages. We’re planning Halloween and Christmas events to introduce people to the building, put some of our games to use and raise money towards keeping it going.

Alongside those events, we want to equip the workshop and restart regular Invention Club sessions. This crowdfunder will help us get the practical foundations in place.
