Support independent media by securing Red Pepper Magazine's future.

by Jake Woodier in London, Greater London, United Kingdom

In an era dominated by corporate interests and a pro-business political orthodoxy, Red Pepper has been a beacon of hope. For 30 years we have been amplifying the voices of the marginalised, and of radical social and labour movements, challenging the status quo, and promoting socialism, equality, and solidarity - all within a strongly internationalist perspective.

We've been able to achieve this thanks to the unwavering support of people who believe in an alternative to capitalism, in the power of grassroots journalism and creating a progressive alternative to the corporate media.

However, we are facing a critical financial challenge. In recent years, costs for media publications have gone up and put a significant strain on our finances, while our income from advertising and other revenue streams has dropped as the cost of living has impacted millions of people including would-be subscribers to Red Pepper.

We have seen the demise of prominent outlets like GalDem and Vice as costs have proved too much. Now more than ever we need those who believe in us and what we stand for, to support us.

With an election on the horizon, and the likelihood of a new government, holding power to account, platforming marginalised voices and shining a light on independent socialist and green politics and alternative, democratic ways of organising  has never been more important. Red Pepper is as necessary today as it was when we launched 30 years ago.

Almost two years ago we successfully raised the funds to update Red Pepper’s digital infrastructure and bring it into the 21st century. We have a new website, and a fully digitised archive which we can use to generate new funding streams, but these will take time to come into effect.

As a small, people-funded socialist print magazine, we rely on the support of individuals who share our commitment to social justice and economic and cultural emancipation. We don’t have any super-rich benefactors. With your help, we can make sure that Red Pepper survives for decades into the future, continuing to be a platform for radical and dissenting voices.

Your support will help provide us with crucial funding to build a platform for alternative, radical media in the coming years.

Donating today will help us to:

  • Recruit and train new editors that bring fresh ideas and capacity to the Red Pepper editorial team
  • Most immediately, to provide unique election coverage of radical socialist campaigning from Labour, Green and independent candidates. Over its 30 years, Red Pepper’s non-sectarian stance puts it in a unique position to provide a common platform to all those challenging the stifling, centralised power of Westminster’s two party politics.
  • Strengthen the business-side of the magazine by recruiting new board members and people with skills and experience to help Red Pepper thrive
  • Launch marketing and sales drives to diversify our revenue streams and lay the foundations for the years to come
  • Continue adding extensive editorial content to our new website
