Aim

Help Us Fights Cholera - Mzimba Health Centre in Malawi needs better sanitary conditions

Rebuilding Hope in Malawi: Help Us Restore a Lifeline for 100,000 People

Imagine travelling 40 kilometres on unpaved roads perhaps on foot, perhaps carrying a sick child to reach the only health centre your community has ever known. You arrive. And the roof is leaking. The toilets don't work. The walls are cracked. But this is still the best care available for miles in any direction. This is the daily reality for over 100,000 people who depend on the Mzimba Rural Referral Health Centre in northern Malawi and it's why we're asking for your help.

The Centre and Why It Matters

Built in the 1970s and serving a vast rural catchment area spanning up to 50 kilometres, the Mzimba Rural Referral Health Centre is the primary government-run health facility for one of Malawi's most remote populations. For most patients, there is no alternative. Yet decades of underinvestment have left the building in a critical state: damaged roofing, cracked walls, broken windows, non-functional sanitation, and inadequate space for outpatient and maternity services  all while patient numbers continue to rise.

These aren't cosmetic problems. They are life-threatening ones.

The Cholera Crisis Makes This Urgent

Since September 2024, Mzimba North has recorded 33 confirmed cholera cases across the communities of Vongo, Lumemo, Kamwe, and Chilanganombo. Oral Cholera Vaccine campaigns are now underway but vaccination alone cannot protect patients in a facility with broken sanitation and poor drainage. Every day the infrastructure remains unrepaired, the infection risk for patients and staff inside grows.

What Your Money Will Do

Your donation will fund a partial renovation of the health centre, targeting the most critical structural and sanitation deficiencies. Work will include roof and wall repairs, window replacement, and the restoration of functional toilets and drainage essential upgrades that will directly reduce infection risk, improve conditions for maternity and outpatient care, and ensure the facility remains operational for communities with no other option.

We have set a target of £5,000, but as we’re an all-Ireland club, you can donate in euros, too. Every pound or euro raised goes directly to the renovation works on the ground in Malawi.

Who We Are

This campaign is run by the Rotary Hub of Ireland, a Direct Membership Rotary Club based in Ireland, part of Rotary International's global network of community volunteers. Rotary has operated in Malawi for decades, working alongside local partners, district health authorities, and community leaders. We do not work at arm's length we work with the people this project serves. We can and will show you how your donation makes a difference, working alongside our Rotary colleagues and partners on the ground in Malawi. Our trusted partners 'We Clean We Green Malawi' and Lilongwe Rotary Club will support us by carrying the renovation project.

How Much Should You Give?

Every contribution matters, and no amount is too small. To give you a sense of impact:

  • £10 could help buy new mattresses for young mothers in maternity ward
  • £25 could cover materials for window repairs
  • £50 could contribute to sanitation restoration
  • £100 could fund a section of critical roof repair
  • £500+ could transform an entire area of the facility

Please give what you can and if you can, share this page with even one other person, doubling the reach of this appeal.

The people of Mzimba have waited long enough. Help us give them a health centre that's worthy of them.
