Rebuild our Cattery - RSPCA Brighton

Aim

RSPCA Brighton wants to replace our cold and outdated cattery with a new modern facility to make our cats purrrrrr.

We are in the middle of a cat crisis, with more cats desperately needing our help then ever before. In 2023 we took in 325 cats.

At RSPCA Brighton we urgently need to rebuild our outdated cattery to provide better care for the cats who need it most. Our cattery is hard to heat, damp and makes it difficult to give the time and care cats need when they are at their most vulnerable after coming into rescue. 

We have been working hard to come up with an innovative solution to create a affordable way to redesign our cattery to keep it warm, reduce stress and maximise space within the footprint our centre. Our new cat pens will be indoors with built-in private areas to reduce stress, air management systems to improve disease control and quiet maternity pens for mums with kittens. We hope our design could help other charities struggling to find a cost effective ways to refurbish their catteries and meet modern standards and best practice.

This new system will solve a number of problems we currently have with our older style design:

• Easier and less expensive to heat
• Better disease control
• Mums with kittens will have more space and a calmer environment
• More space for enrichment activities
• Pairs and groups can be housed together
• Easier to clean
• More usable larger space as existing "outdoor runs" are largely cold and damp for most of the year
• Easier for staff and volunteers to comfortably spend quality time with the cats

 These changes will dramatically improve cat welfare and help us to continue to rescue more cats in Sussex.
