Aim

We support peaceful protesters and non-violent activists - making their experience of the prison system as comfortable as possible.

When it comes to the climate emergency, we have no time left for traditional campaigning. There are currently activists that are being held in prison on remand for over 6 months awaiting trial. With the increase in police and criminal justice powers against peaceful protest we are seeing increasing numbers of activists being given prison sentences or lengthy time on remand.

As inaction on the climate emergency continues, many conscientious objectors refuse to be complicit in this government's carbon death project and will opt to sacrifice their freedoms with the aim of making the changes we so desperately need. Like many others have done in the past. For example:

During the Freedom Rider Campaign, over 300 rebels were imprisoned.

During the suffragettes 40 year struggle for votes, over 1,000 women were imprisoned.

During the campaign for independence in India over 15,000 rebels were imprisoned.

Originally set up to support climate activists, RIPS will support any person who has acted peacefully/non - violently, for any just cause.

We define peaceful / non-violent as: 'No harm was intended on any other being'.

Funds raised contribute to (but not exclusively):

•    Commissary money for phone credit, stamps, stationery or food items on the prison food canteen list. With the food in prison being often dire, this top-up food can ensure an activist stays healthy when in prison.

•    Sending emails and reply sheets using ‘email a prisoner’ – the costs for this are not cheap and really add up. It costs 65p for one email page with a reply sheet and there are additional costs for images.

•    Sending books or other items needed.

We support the activist inside and also their family members, friends and loved ones on the outside before, during and after prison.

RIPS are all volunteers, so every penny raised goes towards supporting rebels in prison and is greatly appreciated
