Buy more rail and ballast.
The RANG team of Crossness Engines Trust, has embarked on the ambitious task of a new build narrow gauge railway. Spearheading this, Severn-Lamb diesel locomotive BUSY BASIL and a rake of carriages from Bygones Village Museum Railway in arrived at Crossness 2018, previously found resting at a narrow gauge railway in Lancashire.
We are part of the Crossness Team, the volunteers who restored one of the largest rotative beam steam engines in the world, starting 1987, completed and in steam 2003. The Crossness Pumping Station, the sanitation engineering concept designed in 1860’s by the visionary Sir. Joseph Bazalgette, opened 1865, finally clearing deadly cholera from London. The forerunner of major sewage works to be later adopted throughout England.
The desire for a railway came after the offsite car park was adopted and it was seen as a way to heighten the “Cathedral on the Marsh” visitor experience.
We will be providing transportation and returning to life one of the last remaining four train sets built for the iconic 86 Stoke-on-Trent Festival.
For this the Trust is appealing for £12,500 to purchase rail track material.
The walk from the car park can be a bit of a leg stretch for some visitors. We will build 700 metres of track from the front gate and operate a novel ride to the museum. Celebrating a first new build narrow gauge railway south of the Thames & inside M25 corridor for 80 years, revives the legacy of the original 1860 contractors railway. Will provide visitor museum transportation and a valuable educational resource developed around an exciting program of Locomotive BUSY BASIL learning activities for both primary & secondary school visits.
