A campaign for the purchase/installation of 2 public access bleed control kits in Oxford specifically to help victims of knife crime.

by Samuel Mansell in Oxford, England, United Kingdom

We have teamed up with Oxford City Council who will arrange for the installation of these kits in key community locations, ensuring they are maintained and are accessible to the public 24/7.

THE PLAY

‘MotherHood’ is a one-person show, written and performed by Oxford based performing arts teacher and actor Claire Nelson. This solo show explores the world of knife crime from a fresh perspective as a woman is forced to confront this unfamiliar world and even compromise what she thinks she believes in. Throughout all this however Lisa maintains a lively down-to-earth approach to life and the play aims to find humour in the most random moments as well as showing the impact on a mother trying to hold it all together.

The play is based on Claire’s lived experience, as someone with a close family member directly impacted by knife violence. Collaborating with the MotherHood team is local youth organisation and music studio In-Spire Sounds. They support 12-25 year olds facing a range of adversities from mental ill-health, isolation and anxiety, to risk of criminal, drug and sexual exploitation. The music featured in the play is composed by project founder Kingsley ‘King’ Boyden and even features the voices of some of the young participants who’ve been impacted by knife crime.

The debut performance is supported by arts and culture festival ‘Offbeat Oxford’ who are funding the development of the show and providing an opportunity to perform at the Burton Taylor Studio at 6:30pm on Wednesday the 11th September.

“I was inspired to write this from some lived experience. This has made the writing and development of the show a very personal journey for me. Knife-crime is an issue that confronts so many families, destroys lives and changes lives forever.” - Claire Nelson, writer and actor

THE CROWDFUNDER

During the researching phase for the play the MotherHood team discovered the amazing work done by the Daniel Baird Foundation, a charitable organisation founded to help raise awareness of the importance of having publicly accessible bleed kits available. This will help members of the community to treat not only stab victims but also anyone who’s suffered catastrophic bleeding from road traffic accidents or work related injuries too; before professional medical help arrives.

Public access bleed control kits can be essential tools in enhancing community safety and saving lives. By strategically placing bleed control kits in public areas, we empower bystanders to act quickly and effectively before emergency responders arrive.

Similar to public access defibrillators, bleed control kits will be stored within secure cabinets and installed on the outside of a building. These kits will contain vital equipment, such as tourniquets, gauze, and other medical supplies, designed to control bleeding and stabilise an injured person until professional medical help is available. With public access to these resources, the chances of survival increase significantly.
