Toast is an award winning beer brewed using surplus fresh bread that would otherwise be wasted. All profits go to the charity Feedback to tackle food waste along our food's journey.
Did you know 44% of bread produced in the UK is wasted? Our mission is to change that.
We are passionate about our beer and have brought an innovative approach to the process. We brew with fresh, unsold loaves from bakeries and the heel ends of loaves not used by sandwiches makers. We add malted barley, hops, yeast and water. In fact, we've published our recipe online to create a community of bread-saving, homebrewing super heroes. Check it out, have a go!
In our first year, we've brewed over 2 tonnes of surplus, fresh bread. But that's just the beginning. Our ambition is to save more than 100 tonnes within 3 years. To do this, we want to expand our range beyond our existing Pale Ale. And that's why we're here. All funds raised will be used to develop and brew two new beer styles - a Session IPA and a Craft Lager.
Our motto is that to change the world, you've got to throw a better party than the people destroying it. So we're growing the family and inviting you to be part of the rev-ale-ution. Let's #RaiseAToast to ending food waste.
Our Pale Ale has proved to be a massive hit and our fans have asked us to expand our range. We've used our loaf to create two new, equally quaffable beers - a Craft Lager and a Session IPA. There's something to appeal to everyone.
We're crowdfunding because we need your help and we want you to be an integral part of our story. We need help to slice food waste and what better way than drinking beer together. We'll create a wall of Toast Heroes on our website forever more with the name of everyone who pledges. Most importantly, you'll get to be the very first to taste our delicious new beers.
Let's make food waste Toast!
Did you know that one-third of all food is wasted? Food production uses huge amounts of land, fuel and energy so we're literally trashing the planet to produce food that no-one eats. And in the UK, bread is the most wasted food item of all.
Our founder, Tristram Stuart, is an expert on the environmental and social impacts of food production. He's also the founder of Feedback, a charity campaigning to end food waste. Way back in 2013, he visited a sandwich factory tossing 13,000 slices of bread every day. Afterall, when's the last time you saw sandwiches made with the heel end of the loaf?
So we decided to create a great beer using that surplus, fresh bread and donate 100% of our profits to Feedback . With the equivalent of one slice in every bottle, we've got a message in a bottle we want to shout about - the solution to food waste is delicious!
We stumbled across the idea behind Toast at the Brussels Beer Project. Their Babylone beer is made using bread, and so named because of brewing's history. As far back as 4000BC, people were fermenting bread to create a “divine drink”. Fermentation is an age-old method of preserving food, and what better way to preserve bread than by brewing beer.
The process is no different to standard brewing. Well, there's one special difference of course - bread replaces 1/3 of the grains. But it's pretty simple ...
We worked with Hackney Brewery in London on the recipe for our Pale Ale. We have continued to refine it with our current brewer Hambleton Ales in Yorkshire, using only British hops.
We've also collaborated with breweries to create exciting variations on our recipe. Wiper and True in Bristol created ‘Bread Pudding'. Inspired by the idea that traditional bread pudding uses leftover bread, they brewed bread with brandy-soaked currants infused with Bourbon vanilla and cinnamon along with lactose – the sugar from cow’s milk – to create a rich, sweet and velvety Amber Ale evocative of a traditional bread pudding.
Other collaborations include St Austell's Brewery in Cornwall who stocked us in pubs across the South West, King Street Brewhouse in Bristol who supplied cask beer to Shambala Festival and Essex Street Brewhouse in London whose head brewer Vanesa has created a 'Brown Toast' Porter in addition to the Pale Ale (on tap now).
We launched in January 2016 after we featured on Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty's Friday Night Feast. Since then, we've had amazing press coverage, from TV (Channel 4's Food Unwrapped and BBC1s The One Show) to radio and national print and digital media. We've proudly kept a scrapbook if you want to check it out here.
We began selling online and within a year we've achieved listings in Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage Canteens and Fortnum and Masons, amongst loads of other awesome stockists nationwide.
