RAF100 Centenary Garden - 'Memories of Service'

On 1 April 2018, the Royal Air Force will be celebrating its 100th birthday. We want to celebrate this occasion and the history of the Royal Air Force by building an RAF100 memorial garden.

Exciting opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity to create a poignant and fitting tribute to the RAF.

Our design for the garden has been selected by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) as a show garden at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2018 .

Excitingly the RHS and Three Counties Agricultural Society (owners of the Malvern show ground) have agreed for the Garden to remain as a permanent RAF memorial garden.

We need your help create memorial garden to celebrate the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force.

Whilst we have received generous offers of in-kind support we still need to raise £35,000  in order to construct the garden.

Funds raised will help to build the memorial garden including the purchase of materials, plants and bespoke sculpture.

We will be supporting military charities through the garden and any additional funds raised over and above our target will be donated to these charities.

So please if you can make a pledge to the garden every penny big or small will be very gratefully appreciated.

We are offering some great rewards and starting at just £20.

About the designer

Martyn Wilson is a multi-award winning garden designer based in Worcester, Worcestershire most recently winning a coveted gold medal at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2017.

He started his show garden career by designing and building his first show garden to support the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund in 2014 winning an RHS silver medal.

Martyn joined the RAF in 1988 with tours at RAF Brize Norton, RAF Bruggen (Germany), RAF Odiham and detachments to the Royal Tournament, London and on NATO peacekeeping to Palermo, Sicily.

Martyn is one of four generations of his family who have served in the RAF including his grandfather and father. His brother and sister-in-law are both currently serving and are stationed at RAF Brize Norton.

So as you might imagine these celebrations are of great personal significance to Martyn and his family.

About the garden

The garden will be a celebration of the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1918. In addition the garden will be a fitting tribute to the ending of the First World War one hundred years ago.

The show garden will feature references to the heritage of the RAF but will also look to the future.

The garden will be  entered through steel panel gates that will be laser cut with the words RAF100 to commemorate this significant milestone in the RAF’s proud history.

Surrounded on four sides by hedging two sides will include six inset Corten steel panels, laser cut with different periods reflecting the RAF’s history whilst also looking to the future.

The garden is crossed by four elliptical shaped pathways which are informed by the shape of a four bladed propeller. The pathways arrive at a rounded central seating area, a space for reflection and discussion which will feature a central sculpture formed from aircraft parts (e.g. turbine blades).

A mixture of topiary shaped balls will be a reference to radar and the so called ‘Golf Balls” at RAF Fylingdales and  at the former RAF Defford in Worcestershire. Whilst linear strips of hedging evoke the vapour trails that cross the sky.

White barked Birch trees reflecting peace will also reference the birch ply of early aviation and air frames. Perennial planting will reflect the ‘colours’ (claret, blues and white) of the RAF dress and tie but also to evoke the billowing of clouds and vapour trails.

But we still need to raise £35,000 to help create this garden.
