All extra funds raised will be used to help the brothers get back on their feet throughout 2023 and beyond!
3DC clients Ahmed and Abdul Rabbani have just been released from Guantánamo Bay and are finally with their families in Pakistan. Without a penny to their name and all that they've been through, Ahmed and Abdul will need all the help we can muster to fund their living costs as they begin to re-build their lives. It is not expensive compared to UK rates, but far beyond anything they can afford after losing 20 years. We need to raise what we can to help with their expenses during the next year.
Neither Ahmed nor Abdul has ever been charged with anything. Both were kidnapped in Karachi, 1000 km from the Afghan war, and sold to the US for a bounty. Ahmed was said to be the notorious terrorist Hassan Ghul; he insisted from day one that he was a taxi driver. Nevertheless, they endured a year and a half being tortured in the Dark Prison in Kabul. 3DC director Clive Stafford Smith took his case on in 2005 and later discovered the US had captured Ghul and taken him to the same prison, but then set him free again. Ahmed and Abdul were rendered around the world to Guantánamo.
One human part of the tragedy: Ahmed’s wife was pregnant when he was snatched on September 10, 2002. Their son Jawad will soon be 20, and has never touched his Dad. We have separately been funding Jawad’s education and his ambition to become a human rights lawyer.
Clive will continue to aid other Guantánamo Bay detainees and will be seeking redress for injustices the Rabbani family have faced during the last 20 years.
This project aims to raise funds to resolve a claim, or other type of dispute. Neither Crowdfunder nor the Project Owner can guarantee the outcome of that dispute, or that it will be resolved at all. Due to the uncertain nature of disputes, it is not possible for the Project Owner to be sure that the amount it raises will be enough to resolve the dispute or to see it through to its conclusion. If the desired outcome of the dispute is achieved in the first instance, it may be subject to appeal and may be overturned. However, while some of the funds may be used to defray the incidental costs of representation, including travel, experts and investigation, the lawyers in this case are acting pro bono and will never charge the client a fee for their work.
