Aim

To construct an ECB approved net practice facility that will benefit future generations of cricketers in the local community.

Who are we?

Queen Camel Cricket Club was founded in 1871 (recently reaching its 150th anniversary in 2021).  The Cricket Club plays a big part in village life, with 40+ senior members playing in the Somerset Cricket league and other friendly 40 over & T20 fixtures.

In addition, the Cricket Club has an extremely strong youth set up, with 50+ members fielding six junior mixed boys & girl teams featuring Under 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s teams, with girls contributing 40% of the junior players. In 2025 we had an U13s girls team and for 2026 we have entered a team the women's league for the first time in our history having grown a successful girls section in recent years.

The whole motivation of the Cricket Club is to provide local children with the opportunity to play cricket in a supportive and safe environment, so the progression of junior players into the senior and women's team is a real testament to this ethos.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Queen Camel recreation ground has a pair of 30 year old cricket nets that have reached the end of their useful life and require replacement. In recent years a badger sett has also compromised areas of the concrete base and matting, leaving large holes which are a health and safety risk. Our project is to remove the existing nets and install a new set of cricket nets suitable for use by Queen Camel Cricket Club’s growing girls & women's section, our youth & senior cricket teams, the local primary school and surrounding community.

If we can raise a minimum of £15k then we hope Sports England will match that amount towards our new nets project target of £30k. We have applied for this funding, but at this stage we have not received an offer from Sports England.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We can remove our old nets, and install in a new location on the recreation ground, new state-of-the art ECB approved 2 lane training nets (see photos above an below on what we would wish to install and where).

Community impact

Female cricket Over the past 4 years or so we have grown our girls section and now have 20+ members who play competitive cricket for the club.

Our girls initially started out playing in mixed teams and playing at various girls cricket festivals.

In 2024 & 2025 we had an all girls U12 team play in local mixed league. Also in 2025 we had an girls U13 hardball side in the Somerset Women's and Girls league. In 2026 we will have U12s, U15s and have our first women team entered in the SWG T20 league.

With more women and girls looking to join our club, these new facilities will be vital to their development and enjoyment of the game.

The facilities will also benefit our other youth sides and senior teams.
