To raise money to help rebuild Shinfield Community Church so it can continue as a beacon of hope in our community
Hi, I'm Richard, and I am determined to run the Shinfield 10km in May to raise money for my church.
I was invited to attend an alpha course last April at a Share session. The course completely changed my life, and the church has been instrumental in my recovery, both mentally and physically.
I suffered a huge injury falling off scaffolding at work and I was not able to walk for around 5-6 years. I've had a total of 9 operations. My leg was in a Hoffman cage for one week, then the second was on for 12 months, and the third for 12-18 months (see photos). I had to tighten the screws every day, which was like a torture device. Then there were further operations to fuse my ankle, including metal plates, screws etc, and I was in excruciating pain.
However I walked to our first alpha session and even though it was still agony, I realised I could start to walk again. As the course went on I started to get stronger and stronger, although the pain remains. I used to rely on my crutches all the time, but I know God has healed me as I got to the point I didn't even know where they were!
It is going to be a huge undertaking, and it's going to hurt a lot (!), but I am determined to run the Shinfield 10k to give back to the church, as I cannot thank everyone enough for being part of my journey to faith and better health. The church as a whole have taken care of myself and Katie, and made us feel extremely welcome.
I am training to try and be as strong as possible, and so with a lot of determination (and maybe a few painkillers!) I will complete this goal!
Any sponsorship will be greatly appreciated and a huge motivation!
