Artefact Returns: Help us build a new co-op home for art, music & community in Stirchley’s landmark development.
Artefact is a co-operatively run gallery, café, music venue and bar in Stirchley. Since 2015 we have been a place where art, music, politics, coffee and community all come together. Strangers meet, ideas spark, and creativity feels at home.
Now we are about to take the biggest step in our journey so far. Together with other local co-ops, we are moving into the new Stirchley Co-operative Development. It is a purpose-built, eco-friendly building with affordable flats, workshops, a bakery, a bike shop, and a hall that will be the beating heart of our community.
For Artefact, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow into a larger, sound-treated Creative Hall, while still staying true to our DIY spirit. It will let us host bigger gigs, bolder experiments, late-night conversations and more ambitious exhibitions, all without disturbing our neighbours upstairs.
Why We Need Your Support
We have the walls and roof, but now we need to bring Artefact back to life. Your support will help us:
Build our new bar so we can pour everything from natural wine to weird kombucha
Furnish the space with chairs, tables and handmade touches that make it feel like home
Equip the hall for music with acoustic treatment, sound kit and residencies to support experimental musicians
Secure licences so we can keep the lights on, the drinks flowing and the gigs happening
Invest in tools and materials for future exhibitions and community workshops
Our Vision
Artefact has always been more than a venue. It is a collective experiment in how art can help communities flourish. Our audiences are intergenerational, diverse and rooted in Stirchley. We have hosted everything from book launches to pottery workshops, jazz nights to radical lectures, film screenings to poetry.
With your help, the new Artefact will:
Champion Birmingham’s experimental music scene
Provide affordable space for artists to develop and share their work
Offer Stirchley a welcoming, creative, and safe place for connection and art
Strengthen the co-operative model as a real alternative for culture and community
This is our chance to build something lasting for Stirchley, for Birmingham, and for anyone who believes art should belong to everyone.
