Mohamed Tareq: A Soul Painted in Resilience and Loss
In the heart of Gaza, where the dust of destruction mingles with the scent of steadfastness, lives Mohamed Tareq. His story is not just one of survival, but a testament to a spirit that refuses to be broken despite the weight of an entire world’s sorrow.
The Void of a Twin
Mohamed carries a grief that is impossible to measure: the loss of his twin brother in the ongoing war of genocide. His brother was not just family; he was his mirror, his constant companion, and his other half. Today, Mohamed walks alone, carrying the memories of a life they were supposed to build together, now silenced by the violence of war.
Scars of Survival
Mohamed’s body bears the physical marks of the same brutality that took his brother. He has been injured twice during this war. These injuries were so severe that he underwent surgery to save his life. Yet, the medical reality in Gaza is dire. Despite the operations, Mohamed suffers to this very moment from chronic pain and complications that cannot be treated locally.
He remains in urgent need of specialized medical care.
The necessary treatment is unavailable within the besieged Gaza Strip.
Traveling abroad for treatment has become a matter of survival for him.
Art: A Lifeline and a Living
Amidst the ruins, Mohamed’s hands do not only reach for medicine; they reach for his charcoal and brushes. Art is Mohamed’s sanctuary and his only source of income.
Through his drawings, he captures the profound agony of his people, depicting figures trapped in cycles of grief and pressure.
His work pays tribute to Palestinian identity and the strength of the mother carrying the weight of the land.
Even with limited resources, he uses his talent to provide food for his family, turning his pain into a means of sustenance.
Compassion for the Innocent
Perhaps the most touching part of Mohamed’s journey is his kindness toward those even more vulnerable than himself. In a world that has shown him little mercy, he chooses to be a source of it.
Mohamed spends his days caring for and feeding small animals, including kittens and birds.
He is often seen hand-feeding displaced pigeons, sharing the little food he has.
Even while drawing, a small kitten often sits by his side, finding safety in his presence.
A Message to the World
Mohamed Tareq is a man who feeds his family with his art, feeds the animals with his kindness, and feeds his soul with the hope of recovery. His story is a plea for the right to heal—to leave the borders of Gaza and receive the surgery and care he needs to keep his artistic vision, and his life, alive.
"I carry myself by myself... no one helps me," reads one of his poignant sketches.
