Book to Blooms transforms unwanted books into beautiful wildflower seed bombs through a fully circular, regenerative business model

OVERVIEW
The ever-increasing digitisation of our world has led to a significant decline in the value and importance of books.
In fact they have become almost worthless and, in some ways, a burden to us.
It is quite astounding to realise that there is an endless supply of overlooked waste waiting to be transformed into something that holds value.
Roughly 50% of books printed in the UK never reach readers and are often disposed of - either pulped or buried in landfill sites.
Books and magazines contribute significantly to the millions of tonnes of paper waste ending up in UK landfills each year.
Book to Blooms transforms books you no longer read into beautiful wildflower seed bombs through a fully circular, regenerative business model.
This unique programme combines environmental sustainability and community engagement.

OUR STORY
Pulp2 was founded in 2019 by our founder and CEO Chris Proffitt, following a deeply personal journey of healing and renewal.
After leaving a troubled relationship, Chris found healing in nature - carrying a book in one hand and wildflower seeds from his mother’s and grandfather’s gardens in the other.
He scattered these seeds during countryside walks, watching the wildflowers bloom weeks later.
That resilience inspired him: like the tiny seed blossoming into something beautiful, we too can grow stronger despite adversity.
Pulp2 became the foundation for Book to Blooms - a circular economy transforming old books into wildflower seed bombs that bloom new life.

OUR SEED BOMBS 🌸 🌼 💐
Our unique 100% natural Paper Clay Seed Bombs are small, pastel coloured, biodegradable shapes made from a mixture of recycled books, flour, fruit, vegetables and wild flower seeds.
These eco-friendly pocket-sized seed bombs are designed to be placed on top of bare soil, where they eventually break down and allow the seeds inside to germinate and grow.

• PROMOTE BIODIVERSITY
Encourages the growth of native UK plants that support local wildlife like pollinators (bees, butterflies and birds).
• REDUCE WASTE
Utilises recycled paper, reducing paper waste in landfills. No need for plastic pots or synthetic growing materials.
• IMPROVE SOIL HEALTH
Native plants from seed bombs improve soil structure and provides micronutrients. Their roots help prevent erosion and promote water infiltration.
• SUPPORT POLLINATORS
Flowers from seed bombs provide nectar and pollen sources for bees and other pollinators, many of which are declining.
• LOW IMPACT & ACCESSIBLE
Can be used by anyone, including schools and community groups. Minimal disturbance to soil and no need for tilling or chemicals.
• SEED BOMB SIZE: 4.5cm x 4.5cm x 2cm

In 2019, just before the pandemic, we bought a 40ft shipping container and lovingly transformed it into a welcoming second-hand bookstore. Our bookstore and studios are nestled within the characteristic walls of a Victorian walled garden, beneath an avenue of whispery old trees.
Our private garden space provides a safe haven for birds, bees, and animals alike. With cosy book nooks and flourishing gardens, we offer a different kind of story for recycled books - one that weaves together environment, community and creativity in everything we do.
This year, we’re crowdfunding to create more dry storage space, so we can process even more books. That means we’ll be able to turn more second-hand stories into our beautiful, sustainable seed bombs - giving books a second life that bloom forever.

We need your support to scale production and reach more communities.
You can help by:
• Backing our crowdfunding campaign
• Fundraising with us through your school, charity, little library or bookstore.
• Sharing our mission and helping more people recycle books and grow wildflowers
Your contribution helps us:
• Build a dry secure workspace and scale our operations ethically
• Hire part-time staff for production
• Launch with new eco-friendly packaging and engraved seed bombs
• Introduce our 2026 range of innovative garden products
Please donate to our page, share our story and join us on this journey ❤️🙏 😊

We don’t just recycle books:
• Many books are rehomed to schools, charities, retirement homes and developing countries where communities buy them to educate and inspire.
• Some are sold to bookstores, interior designers and fashion houses - preserving vintage treasures for future generations.
• Unsold or damaged books are lovingly pulped and mixed with wildflower seed to make our unique seed bombs, completing the circular journey.

Planting a seed bomb is more than gardening - it’s a mindful act of hope and creativity:
• Reduces stress and boosts wellbeing
• Connects you to nature and your community
• Creates living stories in your garden

WE SUPPORT BRITISH BUSINESSES 🇬🇧
We proudly support small British businesses and independent bookshops, weaving their spirit into everything we do.

Our wildflower seeds are 100% traceable, sourced from UK seed merchants who share our values.

OUR PRODUCTION PARTNERS
Every ingredient tells a story - so we make sure it’s a good one.
At Book to Blooms, we don’t just think about what goes into our seed bombs, we think about where it came from, who it supports and how it fits into a future that gives more than it takes.
That’s why every part of our production is powered by waste with purpose, from our valued Production Partners all over the UK:
• Excess flour from artisan bakeries becomes the paper clay base for our seed
bombs.
• On-the-turn fruit and veg from greengrocers and market stalls is used to make
natural vegetable dyes, which also enriches seed growth.
• Wilted blooms from florists and florist schools are repurposed for micronutrients
and colour stabilisers.
• Rainwater is harvested and purified for use in our processes.
• Lemons are used to bleach the book pages and remove ink and other
contaminants.
• And all our wildflower seeds come from independent British seed merchants and
are fully traceable.

WE LOVE BOOKS!
We accept a wide range of books and magazines in any condition including:
• Books suitable for redistribution via Little Free Libraries or resale channels
• School books from library clearances
• Vintage books
• Textbooks
• Children’s books (not board books)
• Publication stock from bookstores, publishers, authors and distributors
• Damaged or defaced books (provided they are dry and free from contamination.)
• Hardbacks & paperback
WE RESCUE BOOKS TOO
Most of our donated books get pulped into seed bombs - but those which we deem worthy of another life, we sell in our secondhand bookshop:

All profits from these book sales go back into Book to Blooms to help fund our circular programme and new seed bomb product development.

Book to Blooms is more than a business.
It’s a story of renewal - mine, yours and the communities we serve together.
What began as a deeply personal process of healing, sowing wildflower seeds and reading books in nature, has grown into a national circular economy model that brings purpose, sustainability and beauty to the everyday.
Whether you’re donating a box of books or sowing the seed bombs we craft - thank you. You’re part of something truly regenerative.
Together, we’re showing the world what can grow from the pages of yesterday.
