Project overview
CMT Move and Connect 55+ will provide free, welcoming physical activity sessions for inactive older people living in South London, particularly those from low-income and culturally diverse communities.
The 12-month programme will help adults aged 55 and over become more active through guided walking, chair-based exercise, low-impact dance, stretching, balance and mobility sessions.
Our aim is to support at least 100 older people who currently complete less than 30 minutes of physical activity each week, helping them move more regularly, improve their confidence and build meaningful social connections.
Why the project is needed
Many older people face barriers that prevent them from being active, including cost, poor health, reduced mobility, fear of injury, loneliness and a lack of suitable beginner-level activities.
These barriers can be greater for people on low incomes and those from culturally diverse communities who may not feel represented or comfortable in mainstream fitness environments.
CMT Move and Connect 55+ will remove these barriers by providing free, local and age-appropriate sessions in a safe and supportive environment. Activities will be adaptable so participants can join at a level that is comfortable for them.
What we will deliver
The programme will provide:
* Two free physical activity sessions each week.
* Guided community walks at different ability levels.
* Chair-based exercise for people with limited mobility.
* Low-impact dance and music-led movement.
* Balance, flexibility and gentle strength exercises.
* Monthly wellbeing and social sessions.
* Three community activity days involving participants and their families.
* Information to help participants continue being active outside the session
Sessions will be delivered by qualified and insured instructors in accessible community venues. Appropriate risk assessments, safeguarding procedures and emergency arrangements will be in place.
Who will benefit
The project will support at least 100 adults aged 55 and over living in South London, with priority given to:
* People doing less than 30 minutes of physical activity each week.
* Older people living on low incomes.
* People experiencing loneliness or social isolation.
* Adults with reduced mobility or long-term health conditions.
* People from Caribbean and other culturally diverse communities.
What the project will achieve
By the end of the programme, we aim to:
* Help at least 100 older people participate in regular physical activity.
* Support at least 70 participants to increase their weekly activity levels.
* Improve participants’ mobility, balance and confidence.
* Reduce loneliness by creating regular opportunities for social connection.
* Help participants develop sustainable activity habits beyond the funded programme.
* Train volunteers to support future walking and community activity sessions.
We will measure progress through registration information, attendance records, participant surveys and simple activity-level assessments at the beginning and end of the programme.
Fundraising target
We propose a Crowdfunder target of £20,000.
The funding will support:
* £8,000 for qualified instructors and session delivery.
* £4,000 for accessible venue hire.
* £2,500 for exercise equipment and participant resources.
* £1,500 for volunteer training, first aid and safeguarding.
* £1,500 for outreach and participant recruitment.
* £1,000 for community activity days.
* £1,500 for administration, monitoring and contingency.
Long-term impact
The funding will allow CMT to establish a new programme for older people in England and build relationships with community centres, health services and local organisations.
During the project, we will train community volunteers to support walking groups and simple activities. This will help some sessions continue after the initial funding period and create a lasting network through which older people can remain active, connected and supported.
CMT Move and Connect 55+ will provide more than exercise. It will give older people a reason to leave home, meet others, regain confidence and feel part of their community.
