We help adults struggling to read in Bath, Peasedown St John, Radstock and Midsomer Norton
We provide free one-to-one coaching to adults who can’t read, or who have very low levels of reading literacy. We support people across the city of Bath and the nearby areas of Midsomer Norton, Peasedown St John and Radstock.
1 in 6 adults in England struggles to read (National Literacy Trust 2024 based on OECD survey of adult skills) and they are 5 times more likely to be unemployed. Two thirds of people in custody have low literacy and this is 4 times higher than that the general public. By helping people to improve their reading, Read Easy also helps them to improve their employment opportunities and their ability to support their families.
Learning to read later in life can be very challenging, yet we know that when adults improve their reading skills and confidence it can have profound and lasting benefits. They are more able to find and retain decent-paying jobs, better navigate everyday tasks such as shopping or taking public transport, manage their personal finances, access public services, and participate in their children’s education. It can be a critical factor in boosting social mobility and in creating new opportunities for people to prepare for, enter and progress in the workplace.
Read Easy groups are financially independent from Read Easy UK, and we are responsible for raising all the money needed to keep our group going. Every pound you donate makes a difference. Your donations will go only on the costs of delivering the service, all of our staff are volunteers and no-one is paid. Costs include the purchase of reading manuals and delivering sessions for those learning to read.
