We are coming up for our 20th anniversary. We are raising £20,000 in 20 days to celebrate and develop our project with all our supporters.

Since 2007 we’ve published over 1400 writers across politics, arts and culture, book reviews, economics, media and everything in-between. Last year alone we published hundreds of new writers, and some well-established ones too. But we want to create a specific call-out and opportunity for younger writers and content creators.
We are supported only by our readers. We don’t have corporate backers and we don’t take advertising, so we rely entirely on your support. We’ve never had a penny of public support and we don’t hide our content behind a paywall. We are one of only a very few pro-independence media outlets out there.
We need your support to develop and refresh our publishing. We’re calling this appeal Bella 20/20 because it is about celebrating our twenty years of work and looking to the future.
The election has highlighted both the poverty of thinking in the political class and the narrowness of outlook in the media class. The media is structurally biased, opposed to anyone who proposes real change and owned and controlled by billionaires and outside interests. Everyone knows this, everyone sees this. But if you want to create and sustain a difference then you need to support it.
It’s not just about Scotland. In a world of disinformation, propaganda and absurdism the need for independent media is more crucial than ever.
Our fundraiser is about creating a vision for Scotland and Scottish media looking forward. We are not resting on our laurels but creating a 20/20 vision for Bella in the future. Our new projects include:
- Create opportunities for new young writers and content creators
- Commissioning research and writing that looks to the future and imagines a better Scotland in 2047
- Rebuild our website to include collaborations with other alternative media
- Reach out to new audiences on new platforms
We’re not shifting from our founding ideas. We remain committed to self-determination, autonomy and independence, still committed to championing Scottish culture in all its forms and languages; still committed to analysing the establishment media; still committed to creating a space for new writers, new thinkers, new artists.
