Fighting the Cell is a documentary giving voice to people with sickle cell, revealing realities, resilience, and the need for understanding.
I’m a filmmaker and documentary storyteller working with a small, dedicated team at TrueLume Films. We believe film can give visibility to real experiences that are often misunderstood or overlooked.
Fighting the Cell is a deeply personal project for me, centred on my niece, Latoya Thomas, who lives with sickle cell disease. Although we live in different cities, witnessing the impact of the condition through hospital visits and time with her family revealed how much of this reality remains unseen.
This fundraising will create a proof of concept — a short, high-quality documentary film focusing on Latoya’s story and the day-to-day realities of living with sickle cell. The aim is to capture honest moments, conversations, and environments that reflect the physical and emotional impact of the condition.
The funds raised will cover filming, travel, a small professional crew, and post-production, allowing us to complete a strong proof of concept to present to broadcasters and partners for a future full-length documentary.
