This fund will help us pay for the remaining materials needed to transform the ex-lifeboat into a grassroots community arts space.
The 1BOOM was originally a lifeboat on The Bleoholm oil transporter. Previously a houseboat, our collective took ownership of the vessel in autumn 2024, with the following aims (see video):
Since then we have been carrying out essential repairs and renovation to transform the ex-lifeboat into a grassroots community arts space which will benefit the surrounding areas of the Forth and Clyde Canal. So far we have been self-funded but we are now in the final stage of the renovation and we are asking for donations from anybody who likes the sound of the project and shares our vision for the potential 1BOOM has. Any donated funds would go directly towards renovation, mooring, insurance, and other set-up costs. Our collective is also very much open to long term contributors who want to make a small regular financial contribution and get involved in the practical work of developing the 1BOOM.
At this stage, ideas for use of the space once renovation has been completed include (but are not limited to) music, poetry and other arts events from gigs to workshops and exhibitions, local history and community education and organising events, and a space for community social events.
Currently we are self-funding the project, with those involved contributing between £20 and £40 per month to cover mooring, insurance renovation costs. The collective meets once a month to organise progression of the project, in as democratic a fashion as possible. Renovation work is happening weekly, on a Saturday, and we expect it to be complete, and for 1BOOM to be usable as a space, by January 2026.
