Logline:
Trapped in an endless, surreal hallway, Olivia must face her fears, her loneliness, and her grief. Only by confronting the unknown can she find acceptance and let go of the past.

Synopsis

Olivia, struggling with grief and creative blockage, finds herself in a shifting, eerie hallway where strange and terrifying events push her to confront her inner struggles. Guided by a mysterious entity, she faces loneliness, fear, and claustrophobia, navigating four surreal “games” that challenge her to confront herself. By the end, she reaches release and acceptance, learning to face her fears and let go.

The project brings together different creative perspectives and experiences, while creating opportunities to build connections and support independent filmmaking across both regions.

Director’s Statement

Jack Grey

My name is Jack, and I’m a film director from South Wales with a passion for psychological thrillers and horror.

Liminal is an upcoming Welsh psychological thriller short film about a young woman trapped inside a surreal and ever-shifting nightmare. The film explores the five stages of grief through a series of distorted children’s games, transforming something innocent into something deeply unsettling.

As the story unfolds, the boundaries between reality, memory, and imagination begin to blur. Each “game” reflects a stage of grief, pulling the protagonist further into a world where time feels fragile and nothing is quite as it seems. What begins as confusion slowly turns into a haunting psychological descent, where every moment forces her to confront emotions she cannot escape.

I’ve always been drawn to films that challenge audiences and create a lasting emotional impact. As a storyteller, I believe films should evoke suspense, tension, and emotion, leaving viewers thinking long after the screen fades to black.

Liminal is a project I’m incredibly excited about. It’s a chance to bring a deeply personal and atmospheric idea to life and collaborate with talented creative individuals who share the same passion for filmmaking.

We are raising funds to help make this film as professional and impactful as possible. A strong visual aesthetic is essential to the atmosphere of Liminal, and part of our budget will go toward production design, cinematography, and creating the surreal world the story takes place in. We also want to invest in marketing and promotion, helping the film reach a wider audience and giving us the opportunity to submit Liminal to UK and international film festivals.

Producer’s Statement

Fatima Isse

My name is Fatima Isse, an international award-winning filmmaker from North London, and I am the producer of Liminal. I have a background in film directing, producing, production management, and screenwriting, with a particular passion for horror and its sub genres.

When I first read Jack Grey’s script, I felt a strong drive to get involved and help bring this story to life alongside Jack, our growing cast, and crew.

Liminal explores universal human experiences including claustrophobia, grief, and acceptance through Olivia’s journey as she confronts her fears. What truly stood out to me was how her journey reflects a very real emotional process, facing the darkest corners of herself and ultimately finding a way towards release.

When reading the script, I was reminded of the claustrophobic tension found in Devil (2010), Buried (2010), and The Hush (2016), which also deeply explore isolation. This resonated with me and strengthened my desire to help bring Liminal to the screen.

For me, Liminal is more than a horror film. It is a story about creative blockage, isolation, grief, and the struggle to reach acceptance. It is a project I genuinely believe deserves to be seen, and I’m excited to help bring this story to life with our cast and crew.

We look forward to sharing Liminal at carefully selected UK and international film festivals. We are developing our festival strategy with consideration for each festival’s submission and premiere requirements, while looking for opportunities that will help the film reach audiences and industry professionals who appreciate independent filmmaking.

The Work Done So Far & Next Steps

We are very excited to see Liminal coming to life.

Our dedicated team includes award-winning filmmakers, a production designer, composers, and a sound designer, all working closely with the director to create the visual style, atmosphere, and overall feel of the film.

Following an excellent response to our casting call, we have now carefully selected our cast after a highly competitive process.

We are currently finalising key filming locations, developing our production schedule, and continuing preparations for production.

We have also carefully selected potential film festivals, both in the UK and internationally, where Liminal can reach audiences who appreciate independent filmmaking.
