September in Gaza once meant the return of children to school – small bags prepared, little feet stepping into classrooms, a ritual of ordinary life and a promise of new beginnings. But this year, for the third year in a row, September arrives heavy with the shadows of genocide, displacement, and destruction. A war that has knocked on every home, leaving people with nothing but fear and deprivation.
Schools that once sheltered childhood have become rubble, and what remains has been turned into overcrowded shelters. Families now spend their days searching for water, medicine, and a place to shield them from the cold nights and the fear of bombardment. The voices of children, once present in schoolyards and classrooms, have turned into cries echoing in the tents, with innocent questions repeated endlessly: When will we return to our classrooms and our school?
Today, more than 645,000 children are facing a different September – without desks, without books, without the routines that once gave them safety. September, once a season of beginnings, has become a season of loss, a marker of a deep wound, and a continuous search for life and learning lost beneath the rubble.
From the heart of this absence, and in the midst of a war that has stolen from childhood its simplest daily rhythms, the Mujawarah & School in Gaza initiative was born – a small but profound humanitarian space that restores to the family its first role as a possible school, even amidst displacement and fear. Through simple mujawarah (neighbourly) gatherings, parents find ways to support their children emotionally and educationally, and children rediscover that learning can begin in the embrace of their family, even without walls or classrooms.
As needs grow and the crisis deepens, the Mujawarah & School in Gaza project has emerged as a broader step, moving from the family tent to the wider community. It is an educational and psychosocial pathway that begins at home, expands into community gatherings, and culminates in the creation of flexible community schools – opening their doors once again to Gaza’s children, returning to them their desks, their notebooks, and the routines they have lost for over two years.
How does “Mujawarah & School in Gaza” work?
The idea is simple yet profound: the school begins at the heart of the family.
Step 1 – Family sessions: Mujawarah and its partners accompany displaced families through supportive dialogue sessions that rebuild warmth and trust within the household. Here, children learn to express their feelings, and families rediscover their role as a space of safety and resilience – even among tents and destruction.
Step 2 – Community gatherings: From the family, the circle expands to the community. We launch mujawarah sessions that bring together parents, volunteers, retired teachers, and young people to ask: What do we have? Who can teach? Where can we create a safe space? How can we share responsibility? These gatherings cultivate the sense that education is not a temporary external service but a collective pathway led by the people themselves, meeting children’s learning needs until the war ends and official schools are rebuilt.
Step 3 – Community and popular schools: From these gatherings, new schools are born. We will support families in launching the first three community schools, built on local resources – small schools for different grades (1–3, 4–6, 7–9), created from what is available: a simple room, a prepared tent, or a safe neighbourhood space. Here, 150–200 children return to structured learning environments.
Step 4 – The Community Education Resource Workshop: To keep these schools running and ensure quality, the project establishes its core: a community education resource hub. Led by experienced teachers, it provides rapid training for volunteers, educational tools, and psychosocial–learning activities. It functions as a living workshop that continuously supplies classes with materials, methods, and support – keeping the project alive even as conditions shift.
Through this sequence – from family, to community, to schools, to the resource hub – pain is transformed into opportunity, and a real bridge is built to restore Gaza’s children’s right to learn, step by step, through their own hands and the hands of their families.
