Aim

A short film by Fred Fergus & Kit Young with brand new songs from Kyle Simmons of Bastille.

Story Synopsis:

The winter of 2006. London. A dingy pub. Playing tonight, The Public. Tickets 5 quid on the door 8:30-late. The Public is a band. A good one if not a great one.

Ted, the lead singer and guitarist. His girlfriend, Cece, bassist and lyricist. His best mate Gary, the drummer. And then there's Andy. Rhythm guitarist.

Everything seems to be going the band's way. The early 2000's has created a fresh wave of interest in guitar bands, the synthesiser has died.

The Public is about to break.

That is until Cece and Gary elope together, leaving a destroyed Ted and only Andy to keep him afloat. Is there a future for the band? Will Ted join his father as he pumps out his 30 year-old one hit wonder on tour again and again and again? Is there even anything left to salvage for Ted and Andy at all? Even a friendship?

Our Vision:

At its core, The Public is about longing; the ache of wanting something just beyond your grasp. It follows a band on a night that spirals into chaos under the weight of secrets, egos, and unspoken desire. It’s a story about how fragile everything can be, and how we are always only a few bad choices away from collapse.

The story is told entirely through Andy, the band’s quiet guitarist. He is the lens through which we experience the film. Andy lives on the margins – he sees everything but belongs nowhere. By staying with him, the audience feels the separation, the thrill of proximity, the sting of rejection, and the guilt of choices that may have caused it all to fall apart.

The Project:

The Public is a project that has been workshopped by actor/writers Fred Fergus and Kit Young since 2017. With all new music from Kyle Simmonds of platinum award winning band Bastille and a young and hugely talented cast and crew featuring winners and nominees of multiple awards including BAFTAs, RTS awards, and YDAs; this incredibly exciting project is now available for funding.

The film will be shot across London hiring up and coming actors and behind the line crew to work alongside more prestigious names in their field. Its setting takes us back to a London that holds a very special place in the hearts of most of us. Skinny jeans, Nokia phones, and night buses. The music of The Kooks, Libertines, and Arctic Monkeys jangle out from the earphones attached to iPod’s in hoodie pockets.
