Aim

A short film showing how one text — ‘Have you got 8 minutes?’ — can save a life by turning silence into connection and hope.

  • “Have you got 8 minutes?”
A message that can’t be misunderstood. A simple code that could save a life.

I started Suicide Sucks CIC after losing my brother to suicide. Since then, I’ve worked to make sure fewer families face that pain.

Our short film, The 8 Minutes Mate, is based on a powerful idea: if you text someone “Have you got 8 minutes?” it means I’m struggling, I need you right now. Unlike the usual “I’m fine” or “Are you around?” texts that get overlooked, this message is crystal clear. It can’t be misread. It’s a lifeline.

The film will show how one late-night text, and one phone call, can carry someone from despair through to the light of a new day. We want to spark a movement where everyone has an 8 Minutes Mate — and everyone knows how to be one. I came across this concept whilst watching an interview with American Author Simon Sinek where he talks about having an 8 minutes mate.

The money we raise will:

  • Fund production and post-production of the film.
  • Create wallet cards and resources explaining the code.
  • Deliver screenings and workshops where people learn how to respond.

Our vision is simple: a world where nobody struggles alone, because there’s always someone who will stop and listen — for eight minutes, or for as long as it takes.
