To enable and empower the most vulnerable adults in East Cornwall and rural areas to maintain and sustain their independence in society.

by Karen Scott in Liskeard, England, United Kingdom

I am the Founder Registered Manager of the service Promoting Independence South West Ltd., and have extensive knowledge and experience working with Adults within Social Services, Primary Mental Health Trusts and charity sectors.  As a Qualified Social Worker since 2010, I have a passion for people's rights; particularly those with Learning Disabilities, Mental Health and Physical Disabilities.

After completing my Newly Qualified Award in Social Work, a Post Qualification in Mental Health and completing Level 3 in Management and Leadership I pursued my career within Cornwall County Council and Bath & North East Somerset Council as an Adult's Safeguarding Chair. This role evidenced the importance of good quality care and the roles and responsibilities of all professionals working with our most vulnerable people in society.

I have  lived in East Devon and Cornwall over a 10 year period as a Team Manager within adult teams; from Community/hospital services to Countywide projects within Devon County Council.  Promoting independence, safety, choice and rights for adults has been the main principle of my  practice and management of services. My  practice is embedded by strength based and person-centred approaches to support and mentor our clients towards increased independence.

By promoting and supporting the most vulnerable population to increase and sustain their independence, reduces the risk of social isolation and self-determination of not becoming reliant on services on a long term basis.

This service and project is aimed at making ourselves redundant within timescales that is right for individuals.  People do not fit into boxes and often our lives are not just black and white.  What independence means to one person differs from another.  The project aims to increase the self determination of the population that often experience social exclusion from areas such as seeking voluntary/paid employment, education and undertaking meaningful activities in a safe fashion.

In a world and society now living through a pandemic; which impact on our most vulnerable in society, especially in rural areas within the East of Cornwall, we need to raise funds to complete our team of Mentor Co-ordinators to get out in the community; to focus on direct work our most needed and rural areas based not on just what people need but also on their  strengths and resiliencies; as opposed what they can't do.  Building on the confidence of the most vulnerable in society;  promotes a community to become stronger and more resilient particularly in times of austerity and the COVID-19 pandemic.

We urgently require funding to ensure we have remote equipment(s) such as laptops and mobiles - so our mentor coordinators can work more effectively out in the community, as well as a rental for a 'hub' so we can perform and being within the local area of Liskeard.  This way we can get to our customers more effectively.

Promoting Independence is not about providing support for people, but to work in partnership with or customers to strive to meet their goals and to access the local community; at a time when most groups/activities are closed as a result of the pandemic.

We are wishing to commence our service on the 11th January 2020, though need equipment to access our community.
