Aim

Supporting the CRRU charity's long-term whale and dolphin monitoring studies in northeast Scotland

Who are we, and what is our project about?

Formed in 1997, the CRRU is a small but estimable marine conservation and education charity dedicated to the research, conservation and protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) in northeast Scotland through scientific investigation, environmental education and the provision of a veterinary rescue service for marine wildlife in trouble. The charity has been leading the way in cetacean conservation in Scotland for almost 30 years and boasts one of the longest-term datasets currently held in the UK. In co-operation with universities, research institutions and international environmental agencies, principal studies focus on the coastal cetaceans frequenting the Moray Firth, providing baseline scientific data for the adoption of long-term management measures and conservation strategies for their protection.

Climate Action - Since whales and dolphins are long-lived mammals with slow reproductive rates, long-term monitoring studies are crucial to our understanding of their ecology in our UK waters, showing how they are adapting to environmental changes and man-made impacts, such as fish stock depletion, rising sea temperatures and exposure to pollutants/microplastics.

Why are we crowdfunding?

The sought-after funding will facilitate core studies by the CRRU research team, aiming to provide the robust scientific data necessary to inform policy makers and managers for the future protection of these ecologically-important sea mammals using our coastal waters.

The funds will be used to enable greater incorporation of community volunteers and citizen scientists in this work, to expediate boat based survey work (financing necessary research equipment, consumables and fuel costs for surveys) whilst also supporting up-and-coming marine scientists by providing practical experience in marine mammal science methodologies and data collection.
