Priory Patch is a biodiverse community garden built on un-tended land, aiming to create friendships, and improve people's mental health.
Priory Patch will be a fantastic community garden. The half-acre site, in an area of 'outstanding natural beauty', will be open for everyone. It will be an ecologically sensitive and environmentally friendly project with compost toilets and off-grid energy. Wildlife will be attracted into the garden through growing native and nectar rich plants, and by establishing a mini-meadow. Bird boxes and bug hotels will be installed, and a pond will be created. Raised beds and clear pathways will make the garden accessible to wheelchair users. Fruit and vegetables will be grown for food, and natural waste will be composted. Other waste will be kept to a minimum and recycled whenever possible.
The Priory Patch will promote people's physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and will encourage the sharing of knowledge and skills. In addition to helping people with their horticultural hobbies, the project will provide a sense of community. Members will have a shared responsibility for managing the project and planning its development.
In a similar way to our sister project, Sheringham Shed, the Priory Patch will be a flexible resource with many purposes, depending on the needs and interests of members. These could include growing vegetables, flowers, and shrubs; establishing a small orchard; or developing an area for more traditional allotments.
