Primal: A Film Suspended In the Trees

Aim

What if an entire world existed above the forest floor? A radical fiction with Leo and Audrey Primal, built up in the trees.

We are a team of filmmakers, movement artists, climbers, musicians and environmental creatives developing PRIMAL, an experimental fiction film that will be shot entirely in the trees.

Leo Primal - jumping

The first impulse for the project emerged after director Mila Miller interviewed Leo Primal in 2022 for a previous documentary project. His philosophy, movement practice and relationship to the natural world inspired the beginning of a cinematic universe that has continued to evolve ever since.

This project will feature reknown figures such as Leo Primal, Audrey Primal, David Belle, Anthony Denis or Benjamin Mjones.

This July 2026, we will undertake a three-week experimental recce and documentary phase across France.

This period is not simply preparation.

It is the beginning of the film itself. 

The project explores the possibility of another way of living alongside nature, not as something distant to observe, but as an environment to inhabit physically, collectively and emotionally.

What if an entire community existed above the forest floor?

A world suspended within the canopy.
Bodies moving through branches.
Music emerging from wood, rope, breath and living matter.
A society evolving in direct contact with the forest itself.

Rather than portraying nature as a backdrop, PRIMAL aims to immerse the audience inside it.

We will experiment with:- movement and life within the trees- filming techniques inside the canopy
- rope systems and safe access for cast and crew
- sound creation using natural environments

-construction of temporary living spaces and structures

- and the development of a real physical community inside the forest.

At the end of this experimental phase, we will shoot a 3-4min fictional short film with a full crew, that we would have developed with Leo and the other talents.

Your support will help us make this exploration possible, from transport and climbing equipment to food, safety systems, filming gear and the construction of temporary structures within the trees. Your support will also help us cover the expenses of the technical crew required for the shooting of the short fiction film at the end of July.

We genuinely believe this project could become something unlike anything currently represented on screen.
