Aim: We are fundraising to build a fantastic, fully inclusive Skatepark at the Lake Grounds, for everyone to enjoy all year round.

Who are we?

We are Portishead WASP (Wheels and Skate Park) CIC, a registered Community Interest Company which consists of resident volunteers, set up to manage the procurement, design, funding and implementation of this project.

As many of you will know, local residents have been campaigning for a Portishead Wheels and Skate Park has been campaigned for at least 15 years. At the local referendum known as a Parish Poll in 2017, 90% of people who voted were in favour of a Skate Park facility.

Why a Wheels and Skatepark?

Skateboarding and other action sports are social past-times that have multi-generational appeal and have grown into mainstream pursuits and inspirational Olympic sports

Historically, some facilities ended up in dark forgotten corners of parks and gained a bad reputation. The Portishead Wheels and Skate Park at the Lake Grounds will be a safe, well monitored destination that everyone can be proud of.

Having access to high quality facilities can help Portishead local young people and adults access the kind of opportunities that are available elsewhere, facilities that they have requested for many years!

Skateboard England describes significant benefits that skateboarding can have in relation to mental health and physical wellbeing. In contrast to a lot of sports, the lack of team element means there is no social pressure on riders who can be encouraged to learn and grow at their own pace whilst being supported by the local action sports community.

How the project will be united by Birmingham 2022

We fully support the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games mission which includes bringing people together by embracing our youth, diversity and humanity; improving health and wellbeing by inspiring, engaging and connecting our community and athletes to realise their full potential and live happier and healthier lives; providing new and improved facilities for our community.

The Proposal

The facility includes a state of the art concrete skate bowl at the Lake Grounds adjacent to Esplanade Road. The Park will be run as a fully inclusive and accessible community facility and is designed for all ages and abilities. Coaching will be available provided by trained sports coaches.

Here is the exciting design! Note: the Wheels Park will be set into the existing grass.

The plan is to be open in 2023.

What additional funding do we need?

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our local community and businesses and our success in securing some substantial grants, we are now close to securing the total funding needed to build the Skatepark.

We need a further £20,000 from community donations to unlock the rest of the funding we need from grant providers to achieve our overall target.

Once this final funding is in place, it will take about 6 months to build the Skatepark.
