This year, the Club Captains have made it their mission to secure funds for new equipment to support all swimmers with their progression.

Pontefract Marlins is a competitive swimming club affiliated with Swim England in the North East Region. The club competes Regularly, and has swimmers who race at all levels. The club is made up of promising, dedicated, talented athletes and is home to swimmers who represent Downs Syndrome Swimming Great Britain and Able2 Pontefract Special Olympics.
The club is made up of hard working volunteers who love the sport and are dedicated to developing young athletes and supporting our growing Masters team.
The club puts a big emphasis on the development of swimmers and the environment they are in. We believe swimming plays a massive part in building a healthy lifestyle that improves physical and mental health, resilience and confidence and friendships, team spirit and community.
We would like to purchase a number of equipment and training aids that will support the progression of our swimmers. Top of our wish list is the purchase of two pace clocks. Currently we have two analog versions have been repaired numerous times and are now losing time or stopping completely. The wall clock on our training facilities is not visible for some of our swimmers as it’s set high on the wall at one end of the pool. We know that swimmers with more understanding of their pace and times strive harder in training and deliver more consistent performance gains.
We have a number of swimmers with additional needs and we strive to provide a supportive and adaptive sessions. Pace clocks that they can see and read will support them to feel engaged in the session and train in the same way as their peers.
These Pace Clocks are not cheap. They cost between £350 and £450 each. We need two so that swimmers can train comfortably from either end of the pool.
We are reluctant to add to the cost of the monthly fees that we charge to cover the cost of pool hire. All our coaching, training and administration support is delivered by dedicated volunteers. It’s a source of pride that that what we provide goes above and beyond for our swimmers and our community of parents.
We recognised that in our club we provide a safe and supportive space to stay active and build confidence in the water. We bring families together at events, competitions and social activities creating a sense of belonging and shared achievement.
We know how important it is to build skills such as teamwork, resilience and communication in young people that benefit the swimmers far beyond the pool.
Our swimmers engage with the wider community to promote health and well-being. Two of our coaches go into local schools and deliver water safety training sessions. We have squad members who have gone on to work I. Life guarding and swim teaching roles.
We fundraise for local initiatives too. Recently the team gathered together a large number of Easter Eggs for the local food bank and are always exploring new ways to make a difference .
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
